What is 'PUDDLE JUMPING'?

"Puddle jumping" is a metaphor used to describe how children experience and process grief after a loss. It refers to the phenomenon where children may experience sudden and intense emotions (like "jumping in") and then quickly switch to normal activities and behaviors, like "jumping out".

There are a number of resources to support the concept of 'Puddle Jumping' and we suggest you use the picture books listed in the Fundraising Kit to help you explain this concept to children with the assistance of story telling and visual aides!

----------------------------------------------------------

Breaking down the Metaphor.......

  • The "Puddle":
This represents the intense feelings of grief a child may experience, such as sadness, anger, confusion, or worry.
  • "Jumping In":
A child may suddenly become overwhelmed by these emotions, showing signs of sadness, distress, or agitation.
  • "Jumping Out":
Children are often able to detach from these strong emotions and return to their normal routines and interests, like playing or engaging in other activities.
