Cattail Fibres

Objective:

  • To evaluate the effect of growth stage and harvest timing on the processing and quality of cattail (Typha) fibers.

Harvest Dates:

Visual Observations:

  • Significant variations in plant composition and characteristics were observed across different growth stages and seasons.

Harvesting Method:

  • Harvesting was performed manually, keeping the plants as intact as possible.​

  • For scaling up with mechanization, it is anticipated that the plants will likely be chopped during harvesting.

Equipment, materials and methodology 

  • The cattail plants were transported to Grassa's production facility for further processing.​

  • A small extruder operating at 40 Hz and 9 Amps was utilized.​

  • The growth stage and composition of the plant significantly impacted processing ease and fiber characteristics.

Extraction Efficiency:

  • The timing of the harvest influenced the extraction efficiency.
