Extraction of Cardoon Fibres

Objective: Extraction of cardoon fibres through mechanical and chemical processes, currently under study (TEARFIL and Food4Sustainability).

Fibre Preparation – Harvesting

  • The cardoon was harvested at the flowering stage (1.5 m in height).
  • Stalks and leaves were collected to assess their fibre extraction potential.
  • The harvesting and separation of plant parts should take place on the same day, while they are still green and moist, to optimize extraction.

Fibre Extraction Process

1st Stage (Mechanical):

  • The cardoon stalks are fed into a mechanical device that separates the fibrous elements from the remaining biomass.

Fibre Extraction Process

2nd Stage (Chemical):

  • Immersion of fibres in water for 20 days.
  • Alkaline treatment with sodium bicarbonate (90-100 °C, 40 min).
  • Drying at room temperature.

Preliminary Results

The extracted fibres had an average diameter of 35 dtex and a length ranging from 32 to 42 mm. Although Tearfil prioritizes short fibres, long fibres were successfully obtained from the leaves through mechanical scraping. The initial analysis indicates high competitive potential and quality for textile applications.
