Fiber fact

The prickly nature of cardoon plants lends itself to unique applications in the textile and industrial sectors. Cardoon biomass can be processed to create insulation, stuffing material, and even paper.

Portuguese partners are producing and extracting cardoon fibers for further processing into cardoon fiber yarn by TEARFIL.

63%

In Portugal, about 63% of soils are susceptible to degradation. Generally, portuguese soils are low in organic matter, and thus more sensitive to degradation, exacerbated by poor practices such as excessive soil mobilization for intensive agriculture and commercial forestry, overexploitation of aquifers leading to soil salinization, and soil sealing.
