President's Corner

As promised, we’re going to have a club night, on Tuesday, May 9 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at Cadence Cyclery. I’m excited! It gives us the opportunity to mingle, meet representatives from the actual manufacturers, and hear them explain their products, advances, and benefits. More details are below, but besides the discounts and manufacturer reps, we’ll have beer provided by Rouleur and other beverages and food by Moto Deli. I hope you can all attend, but if not, you will have the week following the event to take advantage of the deals.

I also want to thank Brian Makarowski for volunteering his time on the Swami’s advisory board for the past two years. His input and insight were much appreciated. I look forward to many rides and beers with him going forward. Thanks Brian!

5/7 Social Ride

On Sunday, May 7, we're hosting our monthly Swami's Social Ride. It’s a conversationally-paced ride where you can meet long-time as well as new Swami’s members. You can check out all of the details here. A reminder: we now start and finish the Social Rides at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in Bressi Ranch (map). Wear a Swami's kit from any year to get a free pastry and coffee or drink of your choice.

5/9 Club Night

Our first Club Night at Cadence Cyclery on Tuesday, May 9 is going to be a big one! Below is a list of items that will be discounted. These will be available until the end of business on Tuesday, May 16, so if you absolutely have to miss the party, you still have a week to use the discounts. Representatives from Enve, Vittoria, Ceramic Speed, and Almsthre will be on site to demonstrate products and answer your questions. Finally, we’ll be selling Swami’s T-shirts so you can show you’re a Swami during the short time you spend off the bike. For the latest on Club Night activities and deals see our website!

5/18 Bike Anywhere Day

Although Swami’s members need no convincing to get out and ride, SANDAG’s Bike Anywhere Day on Thursday, May 18 should give you extra motivation, with 100 pit stops throughout the San Diego and North County areas where you can pick up all kinds of samples and swag. Make sure to stop by the Swami’s pit stop at Cadence Cyclery to grab a T-shirt and some Ting merch! Want to help? We welcome volunteers to help set up, staff, and tear down - contact Mark Steele at mark@swamis.org. Want to participate? Register now at SANDAG.org/BikeMonth.

5/20 Great Western Loop

On Saturday, May 20, join us as we return to the beautiful Great Western Loop, featuring long climbs that are not too steep and lots of rolling hills. For those who want to make the most of the gorgeous scenery, there’s an option to add a 30-mile out-and-back to Pine Valley. We’ll roll at 8:00 AM from the Rancho San Diego Shopping Mall. Keep an eye on the event information on our website and Facebook page for more details as the date approaches!

5/21 Donut Ride

On Sunday, May 21, instead of the LSD ride, we’ll join the famous Donut Ride, leaving from Cadence Cyclery at 8:15 AM. It is the same route as the Swami’s San Clemente LSD, but at a non-LSD pace and with a stop at Surfin Donuts. The ride is usually moderate on the way out and picks up on the way home, once the donuts kick in. Remember your base pass, and please show up at Cadence for the start. Because Camp Pendleton has paused renewing base passes, plans may change depending on the availability of military sponsors.

5/29 Rouleur Memorial Day Ride

On Monday, May 29, we’ll join the Rouleur Memorial Day ride, leaving from Rouleur Brewing Company in Carlsbad. The road route leaves at 8:00 am, and the gravel route leaves at 8:30. Of course there will be a party afterward! Watch your inbox and our Facebook page for more details as the date approaches.

Kit window update

As some of you have heard, big changes at our manufacturer Eliel have added some uncertainty to our kit ordering schedule. However, we recently heard from them that our new kit order is a go! As promised, we'll have a wide range of Swami's 2023 kit styles to choose from, plus arm warmers, vests, and whatever you need to complete your collection. We're aiming to have the kit order open in time for Club Night - watch your inbox for more details!

Swami's Spotlight: Eric Baker

Toward the end of last December, Swami’s member Eric Baker had a problem. He was 1000 miles short of his 12,000 mile goal with only 10 days to go in the year. With all of the miles he’d already done, plus holiday commitments and winter weather, he came to the only reasonable conclusion: he would go for it. Between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, he averaged 115 miles a day, riding distances from 79 miles (because of mechanicals) to 141 miles, and at 3:50 pm on December 31, wet from the rain and having been sick for three days, he logged his 12,000th mile of 2022. Making this accomplishment even more impressive, this was his first year riding over 2500 miles!

EricBaker2

As hardcore as it is, Eric’s 1000 mile week and a half is only an asterisk in his transformation from 2000 mile a year cyclist to hardman. Eric joined the Swamis/Team E11even masters racing team last year, and since July he’s podiumed in half of the 14 races he’s started: two of the California Bicycle Racing (CBR) crit series, two crits at the Tour de Murietta, two Majestic Crits, and the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix crit. Quite a palmares for less than a year of racing!

What inspired Eric’s metamorphosis? The turning point came last July during the 35-mile Wanna version of the Belgian Waffle Ride. After realizing that it had taken him 24 minutes to climb Double Peak on a short ride, Eric pledged to reinvent himself. He began race training, tightening up his nutrition, and setting his intention on competitive success.

Although he worked strictly with a coach for the first three months, he was soon able to do all his training on club rides without sacrificing the enjoyment of riding in a group. A short month after the Wanna, Eric’s time up Double Peak had dropped to less than 9 minutes, and by the end of the year he had lost 40 pounds. His results continue to speak for themselves and inspire us all to become the best version of our cycling selves. We congratulate Eric on his achievements and look forward to seeing where his meteoric trajectory will take him!
