What I'm reading - Mark Appel was the first overall draft pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. After a few years of poor performance, Bleacher Report named him the "Biggest Bust in MLB History." He incredibly came back into the league in 2021 with the Philadelphia Phillies, but was released a couple of weeks ago. Speaking on his experiences, Appel vulnerably revealed some insightful thoughts about grief: "What if grief should be a regular part of life? What if I start seeing grief as I do joy: a part of the normal rhythms of being human? What if I stop resisting grief? What if I see grief as the cost of being emotionally and spiritually alive?" What I'm watching - Simon Sinek is a world-renowned culture and leadership expert. In this short clip, he explains how toxic leaders are one of the main reasons for the failure of businesses in the long term. It's an oldie but a goodie: "The problem in business is we have lopsided metrics. We have a million and one metrics to measure someone's performance, and negligible to no metrics to measure someone's trustworthiness." What I'm learning - Cal Ripken Jr. played in 2,632 consecutive games. He literally never missed. It is not realistic to be consistently great. It is realistic to be great at being consistent. I'm learning that longevity is in its own tier of greatness. What I'm writing - Dane Ortlund's book How Does God Change Us? is a more concise version of another book of his (Deeper) that reminds Christians not to look anywhere but Christ himself for real growth. Some powerful sentences were highlighted in this one. Here is what I highlighted in How Does God Change Us? by Dane Ortlund. |
