What I'm reading - After only winning two games in his first four seasons combined, Atlanta Braves pitcher Kyle Wright is a sensational 21-5 this season. Before taking the mound for Game 2 of the NL Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night, Wright gave some wonderful advice to those who are struggling: "I think that you're just never as far (away) as you think you are. When I was struggling (and) I got to as low as I did, I felt like where I'm at now was forever away. And really it wasn't." The Braves defeated the Phillies on Wednesday (with Wright getting the W) and play in Philadelphia later this afternoon. What I'm watching - Texas throttled Oklahoma last week 49-0 in a game many thought the Sooners would win. When asked about how he handles players who aren't "all in" moving forward, head football coach Brent Venables shared an excellent approach: "Most people quit in a marathon at about the 20th mile. Everyone talks a big game until they're in the middle of it. Well now what are you going to do? Are you going to keep showing up with the same attitude and the same mindset, same work ethic, same commitment? Because it does take what it takes. There is no shortcut. You're either all in or you're not. That's the standard all the time, not just when it's convenient and easy." What I'm learning - It's easy to disregard something important from someone we deem unimportant. But I'm learning to accept the truth from whatever source it comes. What I'm writing - Take on manageable challenges and you'll get frequent signals of progress. Bite off more than you can chew and progress stalls. When you make progress, you want to keep going. When you break progress, you want to stop. This is why you should always seek progress, not mastery. |
