What I'm reading - I came across this great reminder this week from the legendary Dr. Michael Gervais: "There are no hacks when it comes to high-performance psychology or mastery. There are no shortcuts to being your very best. There is just the relentless commitment to the practice of the skills that sit underneath of it." What I'm watching - Former TCU head football coach (and future college football Hall of Famer) Gary Patterson is now the low man on the totem pole at Texas, where he's helping out as a special assistant to the head coach. Although it's not technically What I'm Watching, I really admire his humility in this podcast interview (start playing at the 18:34 mark), where he talks about why he parks in the very back of the parking lot. What I'm learning - Giving great effort is the right thing to do, but it's also the sensible thing to do. If you fail with poor effort, you might learn that you could've succeeded with better effort. But if your best effort fails, you learn that this way doesn't work. And I'm learning that's much more useful. What I'm writing - According to revered defender of the faith John MacArthur, Holiness by J. C. Ryle is "one of the finest theological works you will ever read." After moving slowly through this book for many months I, too, can confidently say that besides Scripture itself, this book is perhaps the most transformational and profound books I've ever completed. Here is my book review for Holiness by J. C. Ryle. |
