What I'm reading - Leadership guru Tim Elmore shared this quote yesterday that really made me think: “People become passionate about something when they are deeply exposed to it.” When we dive deep into a particular subject or hobby - when we really learn intensely about it - we tend to exude more passion towards it. Would you agree or disagree with this? What I'm watching - Michigan State head football coach Mel Tucker had this to say about why his practices are so intense: "There is no relief. It's a constant pressure cooker. That way you find out what guys can do and you put them in those situations and they have to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Then they develop, and if they can do it on a consistent basis in practice, then you put them in the game and you already know...and you're not surprised. We're not just throwing guys out there and hoping." What I'm learning - Whenever I talk to coaches at the professional, college, or high school level, I'm reminded that there's not a higher compliment than being called a "great teammate" by your teammates. That's what they look for, and I'm learning that's something I should look for as well. What I'm writing - I've begun to realize that those who are addicted to visible progress typically don't last long in what they do. Whether it's an athlete, academic, or entrepreneur, so many people burnout after a big success because it doesn't last forever. Because the visible progress seemingly disappears! We should instead turn our focus towards invisible progress; this is where sports psychology comes in. |
