Carbon Neutral by 2045: Can We Get There?

Guest Speaker: Supervisor Lindsey Horvath on LA County Sustainability Goals

Los Angeles County has the boldest county sustainability plan in the nation. It is a roadmap to adapting to a changing climate over the next 20 years, guiding us toward a future with air, water, and soil that are clean and healthy; affordable housing that enables all residents to thrive in place; and a just economy that runs on renewable energy instead of fossil fuels. The LA County Climate Action Plan (CAP) is a framework for regional cooperation between city and county resources to guide LA County to carbon neutrality by 2045. How far and how fast can Los Angeles lower its emissions? Are we on track? Is it even possible? Join us for a CAP update with LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath to hear progress on sustainability goals, the targets we can expect to hit and when, and what it's going to take to get us there.

November 12th, 7pm

Supervisor Lindsey Horvath was elected to the LA County Board of Supervisors in 2022. A year later, she became the youngest person ever to hold the position of Chair of the Board. The five seats on the Board of Supervisors oversee the most populous county in the US and manage an annual budget of more than $50 billion dollars, making them some of the most powerful elected positions in the region. Supervisor Horvath represents the 3rd District, which stretches from the Ventura County line to Santa Monica and Hollywood to Sylmar and San Fernando. She is the first millennial, and currently the only renter, to serve on the Board.

SFVCR Tour of Ridwell Recycling Facility

We had a great time on our tour of the Ridwell Recycling Facility in Van Nuys on October 21! There's nothing like seeing the process in person to really grasp how it all works. And it was so helpful to get all our detailed questions answered on the spot!

For those who would like to sign up for Ridwell service, here is a link you can use to get your first month free. This link will work until January, so feel free to share it over the next few months with anyone else who might be interested!

REMEMBER TO VOTE BY TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5th

November Election: Yes on Prop 4, Yes on Local Measure GG

We've got some important ballot measures on this November's ballot. Prop 4, the Climate Bond, will help California shift from disaster response to disaster prevention before the damage becomes too costly and unmanageable – preventing wildfires, providing safe drinking water for everyone, and protecting our forests, beaches, and coasts. Local Measure GG will improve local fire prevention services and protect wildlife habitat and open space in the areas of Encino, Tarzana, and Woodland Hills.

Please vote in favor of these measures! They may be under the radar, but they're crucial to our climate resilience as we face the effects of climate change.

Join the SFVCR Tour of the Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon on Dec 9

Following our fantastic Zoom meeting with Beth Pratt in August, when she shared the importance of wildlife crossings with all of us, SFVCR is now invited to tour the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon! Join us Monday December 9 at 9:00am for a docent-guided tour of the site of the world's largest wildlife crossing, currently under construction over the 101 freeway. Come see for yourself how this crossing will connect habitats and create a wildlife corridor that allows animals to safely traverse the 101!

This 1-1.5 hour tour will involve about 0.2 miles of walking on a dirt trail; good walking shoes are recommended. Those who can stay after will meet at Philz Coffee just down the road for beverages and chat! To reserve a spot on the tour, please send us an email.
