Wildlife Crossings: Coexistence and Connectivity

Have you seen the wildlife crossing being built over the 101 freeway in Agoura Hills? Curious what that’s for? When it will be finished? Wondering how animals will know how to find and use it? Learn all this and more from our Guest Speaker Beth Pratt at our chapter meeting, August 13th, 7pm.  She will explain why this historic Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is important for wildlife living within our urban area. She will also share next steps on how to coexist more sustainably with wildlife in the future.

We Welcome Sharon Ungersma, Our New Chapter Chair

Join us in welcoming Sharon Ungersma, our new SFV Chapter Chair! Diana Weynand, Chair Emeritus, shares, “I’m excited to pass the torch to Sharon, who exemplifies everything we strive to achieve in our chapter’s work, with her great skills, passion, and determination to make a difference." Press Release Here.

Sharon Ungersma joined our chapter in 2020 and became our Digital Communications Coordinator. She created the chapter’s website and manages our social media, with a goal to make climate education and advocacy accessible to all residents of the Valley. According to Sharon, “It's not that people don't care about climate change; people care a lot! But they feel powerless, or don't know what they can do personally to help or make a difference. Our job is to help our communities understand what's needed and how to take action.”

Sharon has been a Valley resident since 2010, living in Woodland Hills with her husband, two kids ages 10 and 14, and two orange cats. She is a physicist and brings a scientific background to her climate advocacy, combined with deep community ties and a desire to bring neighbors together to work for a better future.

She has a passion for native plants, wildlife, and habitat restoration. After taking the SAMO Fund's class on native plant horticulture, she began a habitat restoration project on space owned by Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority (MRCA) in Woodland Hills. She organized her neighbors to plant and water native species; four years later, an oak woodland habitat is re-emerging, birds and insects are returning, and each winter more neighbors join the planting events. Sharon now sits on MRCA’s Citizens Oversight Committee and hopes to expand her efforts at other sites in the Valley.

Sharon encourages all Valley residents to participate in SFVCR in whatever way works best for them, whether it’s following our Action Alerts on social media, sending an email or making a phone call to a legislator, attending a monthly online meeting, or participating in an in-person volunteer event.

“The second half of this decade is such a crucial and exciting time for climate work. We have some huge tasks we need to accomplish on a short timeline, but momentum is building and now is the time to push hard. Come join us!
