Making Ecocide A Crime: A Hope For The Future

What is Ecocide? Is it a new term for an old problem?

Join us to hear Lisa Oldring, international human rights lawyer, explain what ecocide is, share a brief history of the movement, how momentum is building and how this new law is being applied around the world. To date, 13 countries now have domestic ecocide laws.

And Steven Donziger will share his story of standing with Amazon communities against Chevron. He and his team won a $9.5B legal case over massive oil pollution, the largest judgment ever awarded in an environmental lawsuit. Chevron responded by flexing its financial might and went after Donziger personally. Their retaliation made Donziger the first person prosecuted by a private corporation in US history. Chevron took his passport, his law license, bank account and had him detained for almost three years. To date, Chevron still hasn’t paid the settlement owed to the Amazon people, and Donziger is fighting a big oil corporation mostly on his own. He is currently asking for a pardon from President Biden.

As Donziger says, "This battle is not just mine. It’s a stand for justice for the planet, for Indigenous rights and corporate oppression."

NEWS UPDATE: "Amnesty International, Greenpeace Among 5O Groups Demanding President Biden Grant Pardon"

Steven Donziger is seeking a Presidential Pardon for the retaliation by Chevron for winning a landmark pollution judgement. The movement is gaining momentum and attention.

U.S. Reps Jim McGovern, one of the leading human rights advocates in Congress, said:

"This is about more than a court case. It's about sending a message that corporate polluters need to be held accountable for breaking the law and that they shouldn't be allowed to harass and intimidate those who seek justice. The truth is that it's the executives at Chevron, not Steven Donziger, who should have been out on trial."

Ecocide in the Amazon

From 1960-1990, 18.5 billion gallons of toxic waste were dumped into the Ecuadorian Rainforest polluting it's rivers and streams. More than 900 open-air, unlined toxic waste pits were left in the Rainforest. Thousands of lives have been affected with increased cancer rates, miscarriages, birth defects, and biodiversity loss.
