And Steven Donziger will share his story of standing with Amazon communities against Chevron. He and his team won a $9.5B legal case over massive oil pollution, the largest judgment ever awarded in an environmental lawsuit. Chevron responded by flexing its financial might and went after Donziger personally. Their retaliation made Donziger the first person prosecuted by a private corporation in US history. Chevron took his passport, his law license, bank account and had him detained for almost three years. To date, Chevron still hasn’t paid the settlement owed to the Amazon people, and Donziger is fighting a big oil corporation mostly on his own. He is currently asking for a pardon from President Biden. As Donziger says, "This battle is not just mine. It’s a stand for justice for the planet, for Indigenous rights and corporate oppression." |
