Dr. Genevieve Guenther on

The Language of Climate Politics

We are fortunate to have one of the foremost voices in the climate movement as our guest speaker on Tuesday: Dr. Genevieve Guenther, author of The Language of Climate Politics! This fascinating book whittles climate politics down to six key words that have been weaponized to block climate policy, and then shows you how to combat them.

Our language for the climate crisis is largely inaccurate and misleading thanks to decades of fossil-fuel propaganda, and fixing this problem requires us to recognize how our speech itself—what we say and what we don’t say about climate change—upholds a dangerous status quo.

Dr. Genevieve Guenther is a former Renaissance scholar who turned to climate research and activism and is now a leading expert on climate communication. Using her training in rhetoric and cultural politics, as well as social-science research, she works to revamp the ways that we talk about the urgent need to phase out coal, oil, and methane.

In 2018 Dr. Guenther founded End Climate Silence, a volunteer organization that pushes the news media to start talking about the climate crisis with the urgency it deserves. She directs strategy and outreach, helping journalists explain the links between global warming and extreme weather and headline the urgent findings of climate science and their implications on all aspects of our lives.

WeWantToHearFromYou
WeWantToHearFromYou

It's time to think about what topics we want to focus on at next year's chapter meetings. Wondering if portable plug-in solar panels would work for your apartment balcony? Curious how climate damages are legally calculated? Hoping to connect with local regenerative farms? Want to be prepared for how our weather patterns are changing? Fill out our survey to tell us which climate topics you're interested in, or suggest your own ideas!

Take 2 minutes to fill out our quick survey to let us know what you want to hear about in 2026. Choose all topics you're interested in; use the 'Other' section to make your own suggestions.

Upcoming Legislative Meetings with State Representatives

The Polluters Pay Climate Superfund legislation is being reintroduced in January. This bill is critically important; we will be scheduling meetings with our local legislators to advocate for its passage. If you are a constituent of Senator Durazo, Assembly Member Zbur, Assembly Member Harabedian, or Assembly Member Schiavo, we would appreciate your participation in upcoming important meetings with these legislators. Please email here and we will provide you with the meeting information.

Looking Ahead To December

No online chapter meeting in December! Instead, we'll be hosting an in-person Climate Allies Picnic. Join us for a potluck afternoon get-together in Woodley Park in the Sepulveda Basin, where we'll eat, catch up, and collaborate on vision boards to ponder the climate progress we've made in our lives over the past year and what changes we hope to make in the coming year. Those who are interested can finish with a short walk through the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve. Stay tuned for more details in December!

You Are OUR Sunshine
You Are OUR Sunshine

The famous American folk singer Pete Seeger said, “A good song reminds us what we are fighting for.” Our partners in the Boston chapter of Climate Reality took on that challenge and created this climate change anthem, You Are OUR Sunshine."

This upbeat music video is a positive tool to combat the anti-science, pro-fossil-fuel climate deniers. Please use it to educate, motivate and inspire; it's a great primer for any discussion on climate change. Check it out, and share it widely!

Remembering Melanie Winter

The LA River lost a champion in October with the passing of Melanie Winter, who founded The River Project "to restore the vital ecosystems of the Los Angeles River Watershed for a climate-resilient future." She was a force of nature and a force for nature, someone who never stopped advocating for the better future she believed was possible for the LA River and all Angelenos.

From the day Melanie first spoke to our chapter as a guest speaker in August 2021, she inspired us to dream bigger and aim higher in our goals for what the Valley could be. Her vision for the LA River led directly to our chapter's work building the Sepulveda Basin Coalition, a partnership of over 40 local organizations who collaborated to provide input and help shape the Sepulveda Basin Vision Plan.

Melanie may not have lived long enough to see her dreams of a concrete-free LA River come to fruition, but her influence will be felt every step of the way as the Sepulveda Basin is revitalized over the coming decades. Our chapter will miss her fierce insistence that people do more and never settle for half measures. Rest In Power, Melanie.
