SAN FERNANDO VALLEY CHAPTER MEETING

A Note from your SFVCR Chair

As we've been on summer hiatus, the United States has suffered some devastating setbacks in achieving its climate goals. But the climate fight is not binary; it's not one where the outcome hinges on whether we win or lose single battles. There is a broad spectrum of outcomes ahead of us, and our actions today will continue to shift and shape the future we leave behind.

In the immortal words of Rebecca Solnit, "The fact that we cannot save everything does not mean we cannot save anything and everything we can save is worth saving."

So, let's get back to work.

Our August guest speakers are Dan Kegel and Ravi Sankaran, both members of the LA100 advisory group. They'll be sharing their insights into what's been done so far to reach the LA100 Plan goals, where we are now, and where we need to go, as well as the current challenges we're facing to meet the 100% renewable Energy Goal for LA by 2035!

Next Protest: National Day of Action on August 2nd, Woodland Hills

The theme is Rage Against the Regime, a Nonviolent Resistance, and Collective Power to transform anger into action, inspiring everyone to act, not just observe passively, and find strength and focus from standing together focusing on justice and dignity and a livable future for all. Take Action—Now Is the Time! Together, we make history.

Come out and join SFVCR members in drawing awareness to the current administration's failure to address the climate crisis! Feel free to bring signs related to clean energy funding and climate change in general. Our group will plan to meet/park at the North/West end of the Westfield Topanga Mall (next to the gas station) starting at 10:30am to avoid the traffic build up. We will gather as a group and walk to the corner of Topanga and Victory. Bring water, hats, sunscreen, family and friends.

Sat Aug. 2nd, 11am-1pm  Corner of Topanga Canyon and Victory Blvd.

Climate Reality Project Series on Climate Finance, July and August

If our May and June meetings on Green Banking got you thinking about divesting our finances from fossil fuels, this summer's Climate Reality Project series on climate finance is for you!

As we work to shift funding from dirty fossil fuels to clean energy, we need to demystify climate finance to see how the money flows — and how we all can do our part to change it.

Sign up to register for these upcoming climate finance webinars:

Join CRP members as we break down key ideas behind climate finance, including how financial institutions can lead the way toward a greener future, how to make sure your money matches your climate values, how to fund climate or clean energy ideas, and more!

The more informed we are, the more we can make our financial systems align with our clean energy future.

PS. Can’t make a session? Recordings will be shared with registrants and posted on Reality Hub afterward.

August Book Club: The Language of Climate Politics: Fossil-Fuel Propaganda And How To Fight It, by Dr. Genevieve Guenther.

SFVCR's next book club and "meet the author" meeting will be on The Language of Climate Politics by Genevieve Guenther! A groundbreaking investigation into the propaganda justifying the fossil-fuel economy, this book offers powerful new ways to talk about the climate crisis that will help create transformative change.

Dr. Guenther provides a fascinating history of the language we use that keeps the climate crisis from being solved, even unwittingly by climate scientists, economists, and even advocates who echo the false and dangerous assumptions of their supposed political opponents. The Language of Climate Politics is an inspiring call to arms.

You don't have to finish the book to participate, just bring your interest and be inspired to take action! We'll also hear more about this book from the author at our November monthly meeting.

If you are interested in joining, email Vice Chair Michele Ringer to reserve your spot.

Monday, Aug 18th, 5:30 pm on zoom
