Venerable Martyr Æbbe, Abbess of Coldingham, was martyred on this day in 870. The Church today keeps the memory of St. Æbbe "the Younger," an abbess of Coldingham Priory in the Scottish Borders in the 9th century. Biographically, little is known about her except the circumstances surrounding her death. In order to avoid rape by Viking invaders, she resorted to self-mutilation, cutting off her nose in front of her fellow nuns, who emulated her example. While this did indeed scare away the invaders, the Danes soon returned and set fire to the convent, securing crowns of martyrdom for St. Æbbe and her sisters in the convent. They perished in the flames on April 2, 870. |
