527 – August (date unknown)

Emperor Justin dies, clearing a path to the throne for his nephew Justinian. Justinian was crowned this month together with his wife Theodora, thus marking the ascension of the most dynamic duo in Byzantine history. (See my lecture on Byzantium in the Fifth Century: Leading to Justinian.)

786 – August 1

Soldiers dispersed bishops from gathering for a council for the restoration of icon veneration in the church of Holy Apostles in Constantinople. (For the military iconoclasm related to victorious soldier type Byzantine emperors.) Only year later Empress Irene succeeded in assembling the council in Nicaea, which became known as the seventh ecumenical one.

1096 – August (no date)

Emperor Alexios Komnenos’ wish of military deployment from the West was granted. The first crusaders arrived in Constantinople. However, the “people’s crusade” led by Peter the Hermit was not what Alexios had in mind.
