Voices from the Community: Reflections from a Year of Impact

“Through the VCAT sessions, my understanding of Comprehensive Sexuality Education has changed. Initially, I thought these people just wanted to force all these Western ways on us that have even already caused a lot of destruction already. But after the sessions I now see it as a protective and empowering tool for young people, and as leaders, we have a responsibility to sustain it within our communities.”- Community Leader Njie Emmanuel during a CSE Community Engagement Session

“What stood out for me was the respectful approach. Instead of being told what to do, we were engaged in dialogue. This helped us commit to supporting community-led initiatives that promote CSE.” - said, Traditional Leader Mola John Ndive during the Community Advocacy Meeting

Health Providers’ Voices

(Community Health Service Campaigns)

“ It was such a success having all the organizations here working with VIAC, we have sensitised and carried out a lot of testing especially with young people. These outreach activities reduced fear and stigma. We are now seeing more young people seek services confidently because they know they will be treated with dignity.”-

Seeing other young people lead discussions made me feel safe to participate. It showed me that young voices can lead positive change. And I want to be part of that change too,” - said a VIAC Champion.

"Joining  VIAC as a champion I initially did not expect much I just thought it would be more of attending sessions or online meeting but this exceeding my imagination the training we receive, and the ability to speak to my peers and others to drive change something I did not know I had in me."- Vegha Bruicely, VIAC Champion

Building Movements, Not Just Programs

One of the most defining achievements of the year was the creation of the VIAC Champions Network, a growing network of young people trained in community advocacy and peer-to-peer leadership. Within its first year, the network brought together dozens of young advocates who were equipped with skills in community engagement, rights-based advocacy, and peer education.

These young leaders have created an impact amongst themselves and amongst communities. They led door-to-door conversations, facilitated peer discussions, and supported community advocacy sessions, reaching hundreds of community members with accurate information and safe spaces for dialogue. In many communities, this marked the first time young people were not only included in conversations but were leading them.

One notable shift we observed was a growing acceptance of youth leadership. Community members who were initially hesitant to engage with young people realized young people had a lot to say and could take charge of their reproductive health if just properly guided later expressed trust and appreciation, recognizing the champions as credible sources of information and change agents within their own communities.

Strengthening Communities from Within

Sustainability guided our approach throughout the year. We facilitated many engaging VCAT sessions with community leaders, including traditional leaders, faith leaders, and local influencers, to promote community-led initiatives that sustain Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).

These sessions resulted in tangible shifts in perspective.

Leaders who once viewed CSE as controversial began to see it  as a protective and empowering tool for young people. In several communities, leaders committed to this conversations with the young people wsupporting continued CSE discussions, identifying trusted community members to be trained and supported as local champions, encouraging their community health centers to hhen they came over some community went as far as suggesting to create peer to peer groups to facilitate conversations that way younger people could talk to younger people and older people could talk to their peers

This shift from resistance to ownership -was one of the most powerful outcomes of the year. By investing in dialogue rather than confrontation, we moved communities from awareness to action, and from short-term engagement to long-term responsibility.

Health Services That Reach the People

Access matters and this year, access was brought closer to the people.

We organized two dedicated health service campaigns and participated in three additional campaigns, collectively reaching hundreds of individuals with sexual and reproductive health services. These campaigns provided family planning information, referrals, counseling, and essential reproductive health services in settings that were accessible, respectful, and youth-friendly.

For many community members, these campaigns represented their first interaction with non-judgmental, accurate reproductive health services. Participants reported increased confidence in seeking care, improved understanding of their options, and reduced fear and stigma around accessing services.

Taking Community Voices to the Global Stage

Our work extended beyond local communities into three international advocacy spaces, including the International ODAS Convention, SMA submit, and the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP).

In these spaces, we represented community realities, defended rights-based programming, and elevated voices that are often excluded from global conversations.

Sharing lessons from Grassroots advocacy reinforced a critical truth: local experience strengthens global policy, and meaningful solutions must be grounded in lived realities

Sneak Peek into VIAC’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan: Building a Future of Health, Peace, and Sustainability

As we close an impactful year, we are excited to share a glimpse of our Five-Year Strategic Plan (2026–2030), a bold roadmap designed to transform lives and communities. This plan reflects our commitment to advancing health, equity, and resilience in the face of evolving global challenges. Here are the key priorities that will guide our work over the next five years:

1. Expanding Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)

We will scale up access to comprehensive SRHR services, ensuring that every individual—especially women, youth, and marginalized groups—can make informed choices about their health and well-being. Our focus will include family planning, menstrual health, and STI prevention.

2. Building Peace and Social Cohesion

Recognizing the link between health and stability, we will invest in programs that foster dialogue, reduce conflict, and strengthen community resilience. Our goal is to create safe spaces where peace and development thrive together.

3. Linking Climate and Health for Sustainable Futures

Climate change is a health challenge. We will champion initiatives that integrate climate adaptation with health interventions, promoting sustainable practices that protect both people and the planet.

4. Driving Community Development and Health System Strengthening

We aim to empower communities through capacity building, economic opportunities, and stronger health systems. By working hand-in-hand with local stakeholders, we will ensure that health services are accessible, inclusive, and resilient.

5. Ensuring Evidence-Based and Inclusive Programming

Data will drive our decisions. We will prioritize research, monitoring, and evaluation to design programs that are inclusive, impactful, and responsive to community needs.

Why This Matters:
This strategic plan is more than a document it’s a promise to our communities. Together, we will build a future where health, peace, and sustainability are not aspirations but realities.

Stay tuned for more details in early 2026 as we officially launch this transformative agenda!
