Intergroup Incorporation Due to beginning of automated enforcement of domain ownership regulations, the only way Intergroup could retain the domain slaa.org.au was to become incorporated. Other Australian 12 Step fellowships have become incorporated at the state or national level. Incorporation has some other advantages - Legal entity- able to act in its own name
- Limited liability - protects Intergroup members from personal law suits for actions of Intergroup
- Perpetual succession - survives changes in membership
- Credibility - enhances trust
- Structure & governance - Encourages accountability
- Financial operations - open accounts, obtain credit/debit cards
Due to a tight timeframe for domain renewal, and the lengthy time needed to amend our current Constitution, Intergroup developed a plan and obtained legal opinion to ensure this plan would meet all legal obligations and be in accordance with our current Constitution. Intergroup approved creation of a separate Incorporated Association, solely for web services, operating under direction of Intergroup. Moving all intergroup functions to the new Incorporated Association will require 2 successive amendments to the Intergroup Constitution. The 2 Intergroup meetings dealing with this issue were well attended with 14 attendees with members from 6 states/territories: Minutes June 9; Minutes June 14 Notice to all Groups of vote on Proposed Constitutional Amendment at the Australian Intergroup Meeting at 6.30pm AET, Monday September 8, 2025, Zoom link All groups listed on slaa.org.au are considered part of the Australian Intergroup and thus eligible to have a Group Representative attend Intergroup Meetings and vote on this proposed amendment: Replace the current clause 6.4 : 6.4 Upon dissolution of Intergroup, after paying or adequately providing for any debts or obligations, the remaining assets shall be donated to FWS. With : 6.4 Upon dissolution of Intergroup, after paying or adequately providing for any debts orobligations, the remaining assets shall be transferred to the incorporated body created to replace the unincorporated association, namely SLAA Australian Intergroup Incorporated. The second future amendment, will close down Intergroup under the Constitution and transfer all Intergroup functions and assets to the Incorporated Association, under draft rules which have included the core elements of the current constitution Practically, Intergroup Incorporation will not be obvious: Groups still elect Group Representative to vote at Intergroup and all current Intergroup services will continue to operate.
