Friends,

One of Wisconsin’s beloved funding programs may be decided at any moment.

The reauthorization of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program reduces with each passing day. While extending the program is critical, how it is reauthorized matters just as much as if it is reauthorized.

This is not simply about keeping the program alive for another set of years.
It is about ensuring the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program remains strong, effective, and properly funded to meet the real needs of Wisconsin’s parks, forests, trails, and recreational areas.

While commonly used for land acquisition, the program has done wonders for the management of Wisconsin's parks, forests, trails, recreational and natural areas.

These grants are not abstract policy—they are trail repairs, habitat restorations, and visitor improvements happening in the very places you champion and care for.

Right now, we do not know when reauthorization will come before the Assembly floor.
It could happen any day.

That uncertainty makes one thing clear: the time to act is now.

We urgently need you to reach out to your state legislators—both your Assembly Representative and your Senator—to talk about the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program in meaningful detail.

Share:

  • What projects have been completed

  • How Stewardship grants have improved the places you love

  • Why a robustly funded program is essential for responsible land management

Ask them not just to reauthorize Knowles-Nelson—but to do it right.

A weak or underfunded extension will not meet the current issues Wisconsin’s parks lands are facing.
