Dear Friends,

One of the most powerful ways we can advocate for our parks, forests, and trails is to show decision-makers the beauty, challenges, and value of these public spaces firsthand. We encourage each Friends group to reach out to your local legislators and state elected officials to invite them for a tour of your property.

By walking the trails, seeing the facilities, and hearing your stories, legislators gain a deeper understanding of:

  • The value each property brings– from protecting Wisconsin’s natural resources to providing unmatched outdoor recreation opportunities.
  • The challenges we face– including infrastructure needs, staffing shortages, and conservation pressures.
  • The economic impact– how these spaces drive local economies, support Wisconsin’s $20+ billion tourism industry, and contribute to quality of life across the state.

A site visit can transform a policy discussion into a personal commitment. When legislators see families camping, volunteers maintaining trails, or visitors exploring nature, they understand why investment in these spaces is so important.

How to Get Started:

  1. Identify your state senator and representative at Find My Legislator.
  2. Send them a personal invitation to tour your park, forest, or trail with your Friends group.
  3. Highlight unique features of your property, share success stories, and be honest about the needs and opportunities ahead.
  4. Follow up with photos and stories from the visit.

Your voice — and your local landscape — can make all the difference. Thank you for being an advocate for Wisconsin’s natural treasures.

Together, we can ensure our parks, forests, and trails continue to thrive for generations to come.

With appreciation,
