Their Time May Be Coming Up, But Our Time is Now.

Friends, last week was a focus on advocating for our Wisconsin State Parks. More so, it was to emphasize the value of the Friends group who contribute countless hours, energy, and resources to ensure the ultimate visitor experience. Grant monies, particularly from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, are crucial to ensure quality success for Friends' groups.

We went to a public hearing in front of the Committee on Forestry, Parks, and Outdoor Recreation. We conveyed the aforementioned concerns to state representatives with passion. It was later that afternoon we were informed that the co-author of the reauthorization bill Rep. Tony Kurz, was reamending the bill to include funding for Friends. We at FWSP were enthusiastic at this opportunity.

...Then Friday afternoon arrived...

It seems as though the standalone legislation to renew Knowles-Nelson seems to have stalled. Thus far, it's the understanding that the senate will not hold a hearing. Therefore, Knowles-Nelson will not be renewed outside the budget.

Currently, no Knowles-Nelson authorization is included in the DNR budget. The Joint Finance Committee may vote on DNR's budget next Thursday (6/26). That's subject to change, but the window is quickly closing for them to pass a budget by 6/30, which legislative leaders insist is their intent.

Their time is coming up, but OUR time is NOW.

Friends: I urge you to make your voices heard. This kind of funding is pivotal to the success of your programs, projects, and visitor experiences. They help supply wages to LTE Naturalist staff. It enhances the visitor experience.

Contact your local legislators and elected officials by email and phone. Inspire and motivate your friends, family, neighbors, to do the same.

Team Knowles Nelson Advocacy Toolkit

As we observe the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin State Park System this year, it is especially meaningful to reflect on how the Stewardship Program helps to sustain and evolve this legacy. The Friends groups supported through this program are not only preserving what exists — they are helping imagine and build what comes next.

Forward, Friends.
