7th Annual EFCG Technology Leadership Conference

EFCG hosted the 7th Annual Technology Leadership Conference in New York City on June 6 – 7, 2022. The Conference brought together CTOs, CIOs, and technology leaders from firms across the AEC industry to discuss key topics and trends. The Conference kicked off with EFCG's signature Industry Overview presentation and was followed by panel sessions on topics such as: Leadership in a Hybrid World, Cybersecurity, 3-D Model-Based Design, Innovation, Technology M&A and Spin-Outs, Digital Advancement for Sustainable Infrastructure, Technology Strategies, Foundational Technologies, and No-Code/Low-Code Development. Microsoft's Ben Hammel (Director, Strategy) gave this year's keynote presentation, in which he discussed the importance of leveraging technology – and the role that Microsoft is playing – to increase internal and external stakeholder engagement on critical infrastructure projects.

EPA Announces $6.5B in New Funding Available for Water Infrastructure Projects
    • On Monday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a new round of low-cost financing for up to $5.5 billion as part of its Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) program and an additional $1 billion for its State Infrastructure Financing Authority WIFIA (SWIFIA) program.
    • These funds are intended to benefit underserved communities as part of President Biden's Justice40 initiative, providing jobs and other economic benefits and addressing the underdevelopment of water infrastructure in many of these communities.
    • WIFIA credit assistance may be used for various projects, including treatment and distribution of drinking water, treatment and management of waste- and stormwater, alternative water supply projects, drought management projects, and projects aimed at improving the efficiency of drinking and wastewater facilities.

    The Biden-⁠Harris Administration Launches the Talent Pipeline Challenge: Supporting Employer Investments in Equitable Workforce Development for Infrastructure Jobs
      • On Friday, the Administration announced the summer-long “Talent Pipeline Challenge,” an initiative to invest in worker training and recruitment ahead of the expected rise in construction work created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
      • The initiative will be focused on public and private sector organizations to make tangible commitments that support equitable workforce development in three critical infrastructure sectors: Broadband, Construction, and “Electrification” (EV Charging Infrastructure and Battery Manufacturing).
      • In addition to allocating over $800 million in funds to workforce training programs, the Talent Pipeline Challenge aims to create high-quality jobs for women, people of color, and workers from rural and impoverished communities via partnerships with high schools, community colleges, apprenticeships, and other labor-management training programs.
      • These commitments aim to increase job growth in the construction industry and complement the Federal government’s investment in workforce development to ensure trained workers are ready to meet the demands of implementing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

      Trilon Group (Trilon), a Colorado-based infrastructure consulting firm focused on Transportation, Water, Utilities, Environment, and Community Infrastructure and portfolio company of Alpine Investors, has announced a strategic partnership with CHP, a Florida-based architecture and engineering design firm with expertise in commercial/industrial, water/wastewater, and transportation markets. The partnership will allow CPH to expand its offerings and better serve its clients across the Americas and Caribbean by providing additional capital and resources. Within Trilon, CPH will help lead the national strategy for the commercial market, focus on national private sector clients, and be a key part of the national water strategy. Trilon intends to support the growth of CPH by expanding its M&A strategy and adding talented staff. Under the leadership of its current management team, CPH will continue operating as an independent brand within Trilon.

          Mead & Hunt Inc. (Mead & Hunt), a Wisconsin-based architectural and engineering firm specializing in planning, architecture design, engineering, environmental, and construction administration services, announced it has merged with Symbiont Science, Engineering and Construction, Inc. (Symbiont), a Wisconsin-based engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm specializing in design-build, renewable natural gas (RNG), and process design services. The merger will allow both Mead & Hunt and Symbiont to offer enhanced services to clients, and expand their geographic and market reach, specifically in the areas of water, renewable energy (biogas), and food and beverage. Additionally, Mead & Hunt will be able to leverage Symbiont's innovative engineering technologies to optimize clients' environmental and sustainability goals. Conversely, Symbiont will now be able to offer its clients expanded services along with the benefits of a national, full-service firm.

            KBR, Inc. (KBR), a Texas-based science, technology and engineering consulting firm, announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire VIMA Group (VIMA), a U.K.-based  provider of digital transformation solutions to defense and other public sector clients. The acquisition of VIMA -- which is definitively priced at up to GBP £75 million (~$92 million), inclusive of earn-out opportunities -- builds on KBR's growing platform of high-end, technically differentiated advisory, consulting, and transformation solutions in international markets. It also deepens KBR's offerings in digital and information technology services for defense sector clients. KBR’s acquisition of VIMA comes on the heels of the company’s $100 million investment in Mura Technology earlier this month.
