UK Renews Commitment to Nuclear Power, Looks to New Plant Construction - The UK government has announced measures to boost its nuclear power program with government plans for 24 GW over the next 30 years, including small modular reactors possibly coming online early in the next decade.
- Having previously allocated up to $2.2 billion for at least one new nuclear power plant by the end of 2025, the UK’s current 3,200-MW Hinkley Point C project has struggled to meet its latest 2026 completion deadline.
- Prime Minister Boris Johnson noted that nuclear power is at the heart of the country’s new energy policy, which will be central to moving away from expensive fossil fuels, boosting diverse sources of domestic energy, meeting net-zero carbon dioxide targets, and providing energy security.

Storms Batter Aging Power Grid as Climate Disasters Spread - Power outages from severe weather have doubled over the past two decades across the US, as a warming climate stirs more destructive storms that cripple broad segments of the nation’s aging electrical grid, according to an Associated Press analysis of government data.
- Forty states are experiencing longer outages, which can be harmful and even deadly for the elderly, disabled, and other vulnerable communities or in regions that are experiencing more extreme weather patterns.
- Power grid maintenance expenses are skyrocketing as utilities upgrade decades-old transmission lines and equipment, meaning customers hit with more frequent and more prolonged weather outages also are paying more for electricity.
