Burns & McDonnell presented students from the Raytown Challenge Gifted Program with the grand prize in the Burns & McDonnell Battle of the Brains, a STEM competition for local students in grades K-12. The 43-student team’s proposal for a robotics-themed exhibit earned the school $50,000 in grant money and the opportunity to work with STEM professionals at Burns & McDonnell to transform the idea into a $1 million exhibit at Science City at Union Station. Additionally, Burns & McDonnell distributed more than $155,000 in grant money among the top 20 finalist teams from across the metro-Kansas City area. Over the last 11 years, more than 30,000 metro students have participated in the competition and Burns & McDonnell has distributed $930,000 in grants directly to the top 20 schools.

UK Renews Commitment to Nuclear Power, Looks to New Plant Construction

  • The UK government has announced measures to boost its nuclear power program with government plans for 24 GW over the next 30 years, including small modular reactors possibly coming online early in the next decade.
  • Having previously allocated up to $2.2 billion for at least one new nuclear power plant by the end of 2025, the UK’s current 3,200-MW Hinkley Point C project has struggled to meet its latest 2026 completion deadline.
  • Prime Minister Boris Johnson noted that nuclear power is at the heart of the country’s new energy policy, which will be central to moving away from expensive fossil fuels, boosting diverse sources of domestic energy, meeting net-zero carbon dioxide targets, and providing energy security.

Storms Batter Aging Power Grid as Climate Disasters Spread

  • Power outages from severe weather have doubled over the past two decades across the US, as a warming climate stirs more destructive storms that cripple broad segments of the nation’s aging electrical grid, according to an Associated Press analysis of government data.
  • Forty states are experiencing longer outages, which can be harmful and even deadly for the elderly, disabled, and other vulnerable communities or in regions that are experiencing more extreme weather patterns.
  • Power grid maintenance expenses are skyrocketing as utilities upgrade decades-old transmission lines and equipment, meaning customers hit with more frequent and more prolonged weather outages also are paying more for electricity.

PS&S, LLC (PS&S), a New Jersey-based architecture, engineering, design, surveying, and environmental firm, has acquired B. Thayer Associates, a New York based-multidiscipline consulting firm, providing architecture, engineering, surveying/mapping, and landscape architecture services. The acquisition of B. Thayer Associates will support PS&S in pursuing its strategic growth initiatives by expanding the firm’s capabilities, particularly for streetscaping, green streets, waterfront development, and other sustainable projects. Barbara Thayer, founder and president of B. Thayer Associates, will have an active role in the leadership and growth of the New York market, working closely with PS&S management and overseeing the firm’s expansion of resources and capabilities in New York.

VINCI Highways, a subsidiary of France-based VINCI Concessions, a global provider of concessions to design, finance, build, operate and maintain mobility infrastructure, has announced the acquisition of the remaining 70% stake in TollPlus, Inc. (TollPlus), a Texas-based software company that specializes in toll road systems and mobility solutions. Since acquiring a 30% stake in TollPlus back in 2016, VINCI Highways has successfully developed free-flow highways in the US (Texas and California), Ireland, and India. The full acquisition of TollPlus enables VINCI Highways to expand its technological capabilities within the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) market and sustain its strategy of developing free-flow highways in the US.

Bentley Systems, Inc. (Bentley), a Pennsylvania-based software development company providing software solutions for infrastructure engineering and the AEC industry, has acquired ADINA R&D, Inc. (ADINA), a Massachusetts-based developer of finite element analysis software applications used in a diverse range of engineering fields. The acquisition of ADINA will enhance Bentley’s modelling and simulation software portfolio by enabling users to directly access the ADINA System’s nonlinear simulation capabilities through convenient technical and commercial integration. When applied with Bentley’s digital twin platform, iTwin, users will be able to perform comprehensive safety and performance studies for existing infrastructure assets to understand the responses and vulnerabilities to non-linear stressors.
