Two Heritage Documentaries

Our earth needs eco-champions. The inspirational story of Richard St. Barbe Baker, aka the “Man of the Trees,” can help children and youth aspire to be these champions. The updaed heritage documentary The Legacy of Saskatoon’s Secret Forest tells the story of his remarkable life and achievements. From roots in Saskatoon he went on to inspire tree planting and forest protection around the world.  The International Tree Foundation, which he founded in 1922, is still active in 14 countries. Countless people motivated by him are environmental champions today. A companion curriculum for free sharing and free pdf download describes his holistic world view, and his daring life of action on behalf of the earth.   This is what epic traditions are made of!

Check out the film Richard St. Barbe Baker Park; a Prequel to the Legacy of Saskatoon’s Secret Forest available on YouTube or SaskTel max on Demand channels 46 and 346.

Please help out the afforestation areas, and learn more about the City of Saskatoon Tree Protection Bylaw Project.  Did you know the City of Saskatoon would like to hear your feedback. Here is the e-invite for the Tree Protection Bylaw – Community Survey.

“A large, healthy tree can be valued as high as $16,000, a city report says. The same report estimates Saskatoon’s elm trees, on both private and public property, are worth at least $500 million. “(Tank, Star Phoenix 2017)

In 1972, Saskatoon’s park and recreation board has “ventured into a massive project of planting 200,000 trees for local parks on 600 acres of land south of Diefenbaker Park and south of the CNR station.”(Cronkite, Star Phoenix 1972)

What would 200,000 trees x $16,000 calculate to? Three billion two hundred million dollars ($3,200,000,000) is the net worth of the mature trees on the afforestation areas. This figure does not include the new tree growth or native growth such as Trembling Aspen and shrubbery which are also coming along in the afforestation areas.  A Tree Protection Bylaw is one way to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, UN SDG 15 Life on Land and the UN SDG 13 Climate Action - afforestation is a nature based solution for climate action.

This is what the City of Saskatoon has to say;

Have your say in the development of the Tree Protection Bylaw!

Saskatoon’s urban forest significantly contributes to our community’s quality of life by purifying our air, enriching our environment, and adding character and beauty to our city. The City of Saskatoon currently owns and maintains over 107,000 trees within boulevards, centre medians, and parks. In 2021 the City’s Urban Forestry Management Plan was created to combat the greater pressures being placed on our urban forest as Saskatoon continues to grow. Based on the recommendations from the plan, the City is now looking to develop a Tree Protection Bylaw to improve our ability to protect trees on public property and educate the community about their protection.

We are now looking for your feedback on what is needed, what works, and what is possible for protecting our public trees in Saskatoon through the City of Saskatoon Community Survey.

The Tree Protection Bylaw Community Survey will be available from February 22nd to March 13th, 2022. You can find the survey at the following link:

If you would like more information on the project please visit the City of Saskatoon Engage Page or contact the project team.

The City of Saskatoon does look forward to hearing your feedback!

City Nature Challenge Saskatoon and Area CNC YXE

Help put the City of Saskatoon and area on the world nature scene! Using iNaturalist; take photos of plants, animals, insects and mushrooms between April 29 – May 2, 2022! Saskatoon will compete for the title of the most Biodiverse City. We need your help.  The goals are to engage the public in the collection of biodiversity data, with three awards each year for the cities and areas that makes the most observations, find the most species, and engage the most people.  It's as easy as 1-2-3 for the citizen scientist!  Anyone can do it.  It is an amazing resource for identification of observations as it combines computer vision technology with social networking to specialist scientists around the world.

Learn more at CNC YXE or tune into the Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan (SK PCAP) Prairie Action Plan Native Prairie Speaker Series April 12, 2022 at 12 noon (virtual).  This is an exciting means to learn about the native prairie ecosystem by using the iNaturalist app with connections to other apps for the final count such as eBird etc.  It is a great way to grow citizen scientists and naturalists.  There is a saying; "You cannot protect what you do not know'.   One of the first land management tasks undertaken by land planners is an ecological assessment.  iNaturalist is a great means to compile an inventory of organisms on the land.  It is a powerful tool to correctly sort out invasives and native plants which may be similar. A wonderful way to be outside with your family, or in a BioBlitz searching for nature hiding in plain sight around us!

Would you like to support vital conservation research whilst enjoying the outdoors?   It is great to explore our local areas and discover nature. So why not explore nature with a purpose and join us from April 29 – May 2 in taking part in #CNC #CityNatureChallenge Saskatoon and Area! CNC YXE DNU Simply make observations using the free smartphone app iNaturalistfrom April 29 – May 2  . CNC YXE DNU.
