Help Us Showcase Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area: Volunteer for Doors Open

Doors Open is a City of Saskatoon event during which buildings are opened for the public to tour with a guide to interpret interesting features of the building. While this event typically features buildings which are not normally open to the public we are trying to incorporate some outdoor spaces that people might not be aware of and Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area came to mind. We will need volunteers who are able to interpret the significance of Richard St. Barbe Baker to the City and the history of the afforestation area itself for visitors.

Doors Open

What Makes a City:

Saskatoon — the city — where people, services, culture, ideas, and wealth are concentrated, encouraging relationships among diverse communities and institutions. The buildings that house and support those relationships help define the character of our city.

Doors Open Saskatoon gives the public a rare inside look to the buildings, old and new, where we work, create, learn, worship and play together, creating the environment where we define our city's identity and aspirations.

Volunteer Information:

Door Open at least minimum 2 people to act as greeters to your building /  Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area from 11:45 AM to 5:00 PM. These persons will be trained by the City of Saskatoon Doors Open Committee.  Ideally, more than 2 people would come forward to  volunteer, to make shorter shifts for the greeters!  Perhaps 11:45 to 1:30 for one shift, 1:30 to 3:15 for the second shift, and 3:15 to 5:00 for a third shift, which works out to about a shift of 1 hour 45 minutes, and a need of a minimum of 6 people, and more would be fantastic!  If anyone thinks they can do more than one shift, please reply and so indicate.

We would have surveys and pamphlets for the greeters to hand out from a table set up on-site.  The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas forest naturalists will host two tours during the afternoon, and will also supply the greeters with interesting historic information about the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area which the greeters can share with the Doors Open visitors to the forest.

If anyone thinks they would like to be trained as a forest tour guide, please contact via email in that regards.

The time commitment for greeters would be, therefore to volunteer for the actual Doors Open event taking place Sunday June 25th 12-5:00pm in the time frames above and some time for the City of Saskatoon Doors Open training session -date and time unknown.

The time commitment for guides would be, to host a tour guide walk between 12:00 to 2:20 or a tour guide walk 2:40 to 5:00 and some time for the City of Saskatoon Doors Open training session -date and time unknown.  There can be more than one volunteer acting together as the tour guide on either the early walk 12:00 to 2:20 or the later walk 2:40 to 5:00.

We also have heritage YouTube videos for anyone wishing to know more about the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Julia Adamson
