City Nature Challenge (CNC) YXE 2023

We are thrilled to invite you to take part in the City Nature Challenge (CNC) YXE 2023, an international event designed to track biodiversity and encourage people to connect with nature. By signing into the iNaturalist app and participating in the CNC YXE 2023, you can help increase citizen participation as we compete against other Canadian cities. Your involvement will showcase your commitment to biodiversity and conservation while contributing to scientific research.

From April 28 to May 1, we challenge you to search, snap, and share for nature. It's the perfect time to get outside and start practicing your observation skills. With the iNaturalist app, you can easily find and photograph any plant, animal, or evidence of life you come across. Be sure to note through iNaturalist photograph the location of the critter or plant and share your observations through iNaturalist.

The CNC YXE 2023 is a friendly competition to see which city can gather the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most people. Last year, participants tracked over 1.6 million observations! By joining us in this challenge, you can make a difference in understanding biodiversity and coexisting with nature. Your participation could help uncover new species or track changes in local ecosystems over time.

We encourage you to engage with family, friends, environmental groups, classrooms, businesses, and volunteers to get citizens connected to nature while taking part in the CNC YXE 2023. Depending on your desired level of involvement, you could help promote the event through your group's communication channels, challenge others in the area, or host other activities as you see fit.

Cities around the world have converged on structural and environmental characteristics that exert similar eco-evolutionary pressures on local communities. However, evaluating how urban biodiversity responds to urban intensification remains poorly understood because of the challenges in capturing the diversity of a range of taxa within and across multiple cities from different types of urbanization. The City Nature Challenge highlights the value of citizen science data in answering questions in urban ecology.

Public Engagement with Biological Recording (PEBR) events include several formats, such as BioBlitzes, mini-BioBlitzes, species surveys, guided nature walks, ID parties, and various derivations of these, all of which share the common aims of collecting biodiversity data (environmental outcomes) while connecting the public with nature (social outcomes).

So, what are you waiting for? Join us in the CNC YXE 2023 and take part outside in nature with the iNaturalist app. It's a chance to explore the natural beauty of Saskatoon and contribute to a global effort to understand and protect our planet's biodiversity.
