Mitch Frohman at FIU—Advancing Music Education & Community Engagement At The Wertheim, we believe that the most powerful learning happens through experience. Bringing world-class artists to work with our students is at the heart of what we do—offering them mentorship, inspiration, and a direct connection to the broader music industry. Last week, we had the honor of welcoming Mitch Frohman, a seven-time Grammy Award winner and one of the most renowned saxophonists and flutists in Latin jazz. A Bronx native, Frohman is best known for his 25-year tenure as a soloist with the Tito Puente Orchestra & Latin-Jazz Ensemble, his collaborations with Mongo Santamaria, and his role as sax/flute soloist for The Mambo Legends Orchestra, formed by former all-stars of the Tito Puente Orchestra. His signature saxophone solo is also instantly recognizable as the theme from Sex and the City. A true icon in Latin jazz, Frohman was awarded the 2016 Latin Jazz USA "Chico O’Farrill" Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his profound influence on the genre. At FIU, he shared his expertise in an exclusive masterclass with students before taking the stage for a thrilling performance with the FIU Latin Jazz Ensemble. These experiences don’t just teach—they inspire. They prepare our students for careers in music while bringing dynamic performances to our community.
