Orlando García Commemorates the Holocaust with New Composition "prohibido" FIU Distinguished University Professor Orlando Jacinto García premieres his new work for string orchestra “prohibido” with the New World Symphony and Miami City Ballet on January 26. "Prohibido" references themes from García's third string quartet, "I never saw another butterfly," a piece dedicated to the memory of the children at Terezin and originally performed by FIU's Amernet String Quartet. This new work introduces spoken text to be recited by the performers, written by García in both English and Spanish. The work thoughtfully explores the deep-seated issues of discrimination based on race, religion, beliefs, sexual orientation, and other human aspects, offering a poignant reflection on historical and contemporary injustices. This work is part of the New World Symphony's "Resonance of Remembrance: World War II and the Holocaust" series, coinciding with FIU's Holocaust & Genocide Awareness Week this January 23-30. |
