FIU's Joel Galand wins American Musicological Society's preeminent 2024 Claude V. Palisca Award We are proud to announce that Graduate Program Director and Associate Professor of Music Theory Dr. Joel Galand has been honored with the 2024 Claude V. Palisca Award by the American Musicological Society for his work as editor of the recently published critical edition of Love Life. This accolade, one of the most distinguished in the field of musicology, recognizes exceptional scholarly editions and translations that exemplify originality, clarity, and depth. Dr. Galand shared, “This critical edition has been the most challenging and deeply fulfilling project of my professional career.” Published in 2023 as part of the Kurt Weill Edition project, the edition is among the most extensive to date, featuring 888 score pages across two volumes, a 237-page critical report, and a 30,000-word introductory essay. The performing materials derived from this edition have already been showcased in productions in Freiburg and Bern, with additional stagings planned by Opera North and New York City Center’s Encores! series in 2025. Additionally, Love Life is the eighth release from the Kurt Weill Edition to earn a Paul Revere Award for Graphic Excellence from the Music Publishers’ Association of the United States. The edition underscores the work’s influence as the first “concept musical,” inspiring later masterpieces such as Cabaret and Company. This award highlights Dr. Galand’s dedication to advancing the legacy of Kurt Weill and reflects the Wertheim School of Music’s commitment to excellence in scholarship and performance. Congratulations to Dr. Galand on this well-deserved honor! |
