Viennese musician and composer Mia Zabelka, renowned for her innovative and boundary-pushing approach to music, has been awarded the prestigious Austrian Art Prize for Music 2021 by the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport. Zabelka has released multiple albums and performed at various festivals and venues around the world. She is widely acclaimed for her experimental use of the violin and electronic music, incorporating elements of noise, drone, and improvisation into her compositions. Zabelka has worked with a variety of artists and collaborators, including John Zorn and the experimental music group Zeitkratzer. She has been described as a pioneer of electro-acoustic performance art, with a unique musical language that incorporates physical movement and expands the sound range of the violin with electronic devices, alien objects, and vocals. In her music, Zabelka explores the acoustic interaction between her body and the surrounding environment, with a special focus on the "sonic gesture." Zabelka's sound art reflects the interface between humans and autonomous machines, exploring how communication can occur in hybrid environments. She is particularly interested in the interdisciplinarity between music and science, describing her work as "scientific music" that is concerned with making automatic, mechanical processes audible. With her sound experiments, Zabelka explores noise, movement, automation, division, symbiosis, dissonance, and resonance. Zabelka has given concerts and performances at many festivals throughout Europe, America, and Asia, including the CTM/ Berlin, Rewire/ Den Haag, and musikprotokoll/ Steirischer Herbst/ Graz festivals. She has collaborated with numerous artists, including Elliott Sharp, Dälek, Phill Niblock, Pauline Oliveros, Robin Rimbaud, Electric Indigo, John Russell, Maggie Nicols, and Lydia Lunch. Zabelka's music is available for streaming on various platforms such as Soundcloud and Bandcamp. In addition, she has released numerous CD, vinyl, and video recordings, including her recent composition, "For Pauline Oliveros," commissioned by Steirischer Herbst/ Musikprotokoll and the Austrian Cultural Forum New York. Mia Zabelka is currently the artistic director of the Phonofemme Festival Vienna and Klanghaus Untergreith in South Styria, Austria.
