Welcoming New Partners to the GRATA International Kazakhstan team


We are delighted to share the news on senior promotions within the GRATA International Kazakhstan team announced on October 13, 2023, during the annual GRATA International Conference held in Belek, Turkey.


Timur Berekmoinov, who has been serving as the Head of the Intellectual Property Department, and Kanat Adilbekov from the Tax and Customs Law Department, have received promotions to the position of Partner.


Timur Berekmoinov, since his commencement with GRATA International in 2012, has been instrumental in advancing the intellectual property practice in Kazakhstan. His dedication and expertise have led to the firm's inclusion in the prestigious international Legal 500 ranking.
Timur specializes in broad issues of intellectual property (IP) law. His significant contributions to IP litigation have set GRATA apart from its competitors, earning the firm a distinct reputation among clients, practitioners, patent attorneys, and government agencies.

Kanat Adilbekov, who joined GRATA International in 2011, has consistently demonstrated professionalism and commitment to the values and objectives of our firm. His expertise in tax legislation, combined with a remarkable ability to foster client relationships, has significantly contributed to the success of several high-profile cases, including appeals against outcomes of tax inspections and the undertaking of tax reviews for prominent international and domestic clients.


Kanat has also successfully co-leaded the tax audit practice within the Department.

GRATA International Beijing together with Zhongman Petroleum and Natural Gas (Gulf) FZE visited Astana International Financial Center


GRATA International Beijing accompanied by their longstanding client, the Chinese company Zhongman Petroleum and Natural Gas (Gulf) FZE, recently visited the Astana International Financial Center.


During this visit, our Chinese partners had the unique opportunity to witness the operations of the AIFC Court and the International Arbitration Center.


Since Kazakhstan's independence, Chinese investments in our country have exceeded 23 billion dollars. As bilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and China deepens and the "Belt and Road" initiative continues to develop, an increasing number of Chinese business representatives are considering our country as a promising investment destination. Our clients from China are actively engaged in a wide range of projects in Kazakhstan, across sectors including construction and  infrastructure, oil and gas, industry and trade.


Furthermore, an increasing number of Chinese companies are now choosing to incorporate the AIFC Court and the International Arbitration Center as their primary institutions for resolving business disputes in Kazakhstan.

Experts from GRATA International offices from Minsk and Saint-Petersburg will present the key issues at the II forum "Construction activity and law "On October 27, 2023, Maxim Lashkevich, Partner and Head of the "Real Estate" practice, will present the following topics during the discussion panel on "Novelties and Current Enforcement of Construction Legislation".


Dmitry Viltovsky, Managing Partner and Head of the "Corporate Law, M&A" practice at GRATA International, Belarus, and Pavel Balyuk, Counsel, Advocate, and expert at GRATA International, Saint-Petersburg, will present the topic "Algorithm for a Belarusian company to enter the construction market of the Russian Federation as the primary market for exporting construction services" as part of the forum section "Entering the construction market of Russia and Kazakhstan."

Experts from the "Contract Law" practice at GRATA International, Belarus will be speakers at the XI Belarusian Forum of Corporate Lawyers


On October 20, 2023, Natalia Zhuk, Counsel, and Polina Sachava, Associate at GRATA International, Belarus will address key topics at the "Currency Agreements: registration from October 1, 2023, and features of the conclusion" session of the XI Belarusian Forum of Corporate Lawyers.


Natalia and Polina are regular speakers at this event, where they annually share their expertise on Belarusian currency legislation.


Natalia Zhuk will focus on two practical situations during her presentation:

  • The use of electronic communication in the conclusion of foreign trade contracts and related agreements;
  • The conclusion of foreign trade contracts using digital signatures: risks and opportunities.

Polina Sachava will provide insights into the changes in the registration of foreign exchange contracts on the National Bank's portal, which are effective from October 1, 2023.

GRATA International hosted Conference in Turkey


On October 13-14, 2023, GRATA International held a conference "Office growth and Integration 2023" in Belek, Turkey with the participation of more than 80 colleagues from 17 jurisdictions, strengthening cohesion and synergy within the international network.


During the conference, the participants had the opportunity to listen to interesting reports from Partners from all offices, discuss current issues in the framework of panel sessions, share their experiences and simply communicate in an informal setting.


The GRATA International Conference is a significant event in which colleagues from different offices can get to know each other better, discuss the possibilities of potential cooperation and business development. Such meetings have a positive impact on professional relations and the development of our global network as a whole.

Joint meeting of the Oil & Gas and Mining Committees in Baku, Azerbaijan


On September 29th, the in-person meeting of the Oil & Gas and Mining Committees took place at the Hilton Baku hotel, with participation of GRATA International office representatives from various countries, including Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and the UK. The meeting provided an excellent platform for colleagues to discuss significant aspects of the Oil & Gas and Mining sectors’ growth as well as to share experiences and explore the possibilities of joint work.


Also, we are proud to emphasize that this event coincided with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the GRATA International Azerbaijan office. We express our sincere gratitude to Ummi Jalilova, Managing Partner of the Baku office, and the entire GRATA International Azerbaijan team for their hospitality and for organizing such an unforgettable event. 


On September 30th, a cultural program was held by the GRATA International Azerbaijan office, during which the guests got acquainted with the history of Baku, explored the modern city and immersed themselves in the wonderful atmosphere of Baku.

Scheme of Arrangement and Transfer of Incorporation in AIFΠ‘

GRATA International participated at the English Law Week in Central Asia, organised by the Eurasian CIS Legal Professionals’ Forum and the British-Kazakh Law Association.

The event took place on 21 September 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Counsel of GRATA International Aruzhan Aimak presented and explored the topic of "Scheme of Arrangement and Transfer of Incorporation in AIFΠ‘".

GRATA International spoke at the IP Dialogue Kazakhstan round table under the auspices of INTA


On September 26, 2023, the IP dialogue Kazakhstan round table on the issues of combating counterfeiting in Kazakhstan was held in a hybrid format.

The event was held as an open discussion with the support of the International Trademark Association (INTA).


The main purpose of the round table was to discuss issues of combating illegal circulation of industrial products, protecting the market from counterfeits and fake products.


Timur Berekmoinov, Counsel at GRATA International Almaty office, spoke on the topic β€œProtection against parallel imports in Kazakhstan” at the panel discussion "Protection of trademark rights: current situation and new trends".


During the presentation the issues of protection against parallel imports at the border of the Republic of Kazakhstan, at places of sale of goods, as well as on Kazakh marketplaces were discussed.


Among the speakers of the round table also were representatives of INTA, civil servants (Ministry of Justice, State Revenue Committee, etc.), the Union of Patent Attorneys of Kazakhstan, copyright holders (Lego, Procter & Gamble, Toyota and others).
