The Atyrau branch of GRATA International jointly with the British Chamber of Commerce in Kazakhstan and Petrocouncil held a business breakfast

The Atyrau branch of GRATA International, represented by Partner and Director Zaira Sarsenova, jointly with the British Chamber of Commerce in Kazakhstan and Petrocouncil, the Council for the Development of Strategic Partnerships in the Oil and Gas Industry, held a business breakfast on the topic of liability of legal entities for environmental offenses.

Speaker of GRATA International Leila Makhmetova highlighted important issues in the field of environmental legislation, also shared legal regulation and practical recommendations in this area.


Representatives of such large industrial companies as Tengizchevroil, NCOC, Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industries Inc., Embamunaigas JSC, etc. joined us at breakfast for discussion.

As part of the business breakfast, the participants held networking and exchanged experiences.

GRATA International participated at the EBRD Annual Meeting & Business Forum in Uzbekistan


On May 16-18, 2022, the EBRD Annual Meeting & Business Forum was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.


This year's Annual Meeting & Business Forum was focused on 'Investing in Resilience' – an approach that aims to ensure economic stability in times of crisis and promote sustainable economic growth. 


The meeting was brought together policymakers, business leaders and experts to discuss practical strategies to create a more resilient global economy. 


Representatives of GRATA International: Ummi Jalilova - Managing Partner in Azerbaijan, Gulnur Nurkeyeva - Partner in China, Lola Abdukhalykova - Counsel in Kazakhstan, Nurlan Kyshtobaev and Elvira Maratova - Partners in Kyrgyzstan, Gokmen Baspinar - Senior Partner in Turkey, Bakhodir Jabborov - Managing Partner in Uzbekistan are participating in-person at the Forum.

Partner of Astana office at GRATA International took part in the 14th meeting of the Kazakh-German Business Council

On May 16, 2023, the 14th meeting of the Kazakh-German Business Council on the topic: "New Kazakhstan - new opportunities for cooperation" was held in Astana.

The meeting was attended by Samat Daumov, Partner, Director of Astana office at GRATA International.


Within the framework of the meeting, 4 parallel sessions dedicated to the areas were held, :

1. "Agriculture"

2. "Energy and Energy Efficiency, minerals";

3. "Transport and logistics";

4. "Search and training of skilled employees".

Bolormaa Volodya has participated as a judge in the 2023 Academic Conference for International Law Students in Mongolia


Bolormaa Volodya, the Partner and Advocate of GRATA International Mongolia LLP, has participated as a judge in the “2023 Academic Conference for International Law Students in honor of Plenipotentiary and Juris Doctor Khashbat Ludevdorj” that was organized by the Law School of the National University of Mongolia on April 29, 2023.


The Academic Conference is held annually in the international law field, and this year it was organized in English for the first time. Research papers including “The Interpretation of Article 98(2) of the Rome Statute and its Impact on the International Criminal Court”; “Challenges with Invoking the Right to Self-Defense in international law/On the example of Russian-Ukrainian conflict/”; “The Problematic Issue of Stabilization of the Investment Law”; “The Use of Nuclear Weapons in International Law and Mongolia’s status as a nuclear-weapons-free State”; and “The Role of National Courts in Applying Ordre Public and Mandatory Rules in International Arbitration” have been selected as the best.  

Meeting of the Construction and Infrastructure Working Group in Azerbaijan


On 3 May 2023, the next meeting of the AHK Azerbaijan Construction and Infrastructure Working Group took place with the Baku General Directorate on Architecture and Urban Planning under the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture. The meeting was attended by around 40 company representatives, and discussions were held regarding the reforms carried out in the field of urban planning and construction in the country in the context of strengthening the public-private dialogue.


Opening the meeting, the Chairperson of the Construction and Infrastructure Working Group, Ms. Ummi Jalilova, welcomed the participants, introduced the agenda of the meeting and further stressed the importance of this particular topic in strengthening the public-private sector dialogue in the urban planning and construction area.


Joining the meeting as a guest speaker, the Acting Head of the Baku General Directorate on Architecture and Urban Planning, Mr Riad Gasimov, welcomed the event participants with his opening speech and gave brief information about the activities of the General Directorate.


Later, the representative of the General Directorate, Ms Elnaz Sultanova, gave a presentation on the topic of "Baku Urban Planning Experience: Reform Agenda". During the presentation, overall, the main directions and goals of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture and the General Directorate and key issues, such as important reforms carried out in the fields of urban planning, architecture and construction, obtaining construction and operation permits, the functionality of the "e-tikinti.gov.az" portal, the facade passport of buildings and facilities, and the strategy for the transition to Building Information Modeling (BIM) were touched upon.


The meeting continued with active discussions, and the guest speaker answered questions raised by the participants.

The Business Forum focusing on investment opportunities in Kazakhstan took place in Hong Kong 


April 21, 2023, the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Hong Kong and Macao SAR’s, PRC in conjunction with the China Hong Kong International Business Association, arranged a business forum in Hong Kong for the first time in the last 6 years. 

The forum was attended by representatives of the Hong Kong Government, Chambers of Commerce and more than 50 local companies specializing in trade, finance, logistics, industry, food imports, etc.


During the event, the management of Kazakh Invest, Astana International Financial Center, QazTrade and other Kazakhstani introduced participants to the business climate and the investment opportunities of the Republic of Kazakhstan. 


Shaimerden Chikanayev, Partner at GRATA International (Currently on a study sabbatical until 2026, not an employee of GRATA) participated as a delegate in the business forum focusing on investment opportunities in Kazakhstan which took place in Hong Kong.


Following the forum, Kazakhstan and Hong Kong business communities reached agreements to establish close ties and consider the possibility of implementing joint projects.

GRATA International Kazakhstan took part in the Mining and Exploration Forum, MINEX Kazakhstan 2023


On April 19-20, 2023, the 13th Mining and Geological Forum, MINEX Kazakhstan, was hosted in Astana under the general theme of "Managing natural resources to accelerate national development."


The forum was organized by ТОО «Горный Форум» (Kazakhstan) with the support of Kazakhstani and international partner organizations. During the event, participants discussed the challenges and opportunities for growth and progress in the mining and geological industry in Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries.


The forum began with welcoming speeches from the organizers, followed by the announcement of the first session, which was moderated by Almat Daumov, Partner at GRATA International.


During the second session, Almat also spoke on the topic of “About some legal risks of geological exploration in Kazakhstan and ways to solve them”.

The forum was also attended by other representatives of GRATA International, including Baizhan Bekzhanov, Zaira Sarsenova, Samat Daumov and Ainura Takeeva.


We would like to thank the organizers for hosting such a large-scale event, during which the most relevant topics related to the mining industry were discussed.

100 Elite Lawyers of China


According to the data of the Ministry of Justice of the People's Republic of China, the number of licensed and qualified lawyers in China reached 620,000 in 2022. However, the number of lawyers per capita in China is still relatively low; there are 4.2 lawyers per 10,000 people. Every year, the China Business Law Journal recognizes 150 practicing Chinese lawyers and 100 practicing international lawyers in China.

Earlier in 2021, we announced that Mrs. Gulnur Nurkeeva, Partner, Head of GRATA International China Office, was recognised as a finalist and was nominated for the title of the Top 100 Elite Lawyers in China. Two years later, Gulnur has not only been nominated, but also distinguished as one of the winners of the prestigious award "The 2022 A-List China's elite 100 lawyers" with the engraving "法律精英," which translates to the «legal elite».
