Surviving a Minnesota Winter

fccab6-20190310-snow10

For those of us not used to the Minnesota cold and snow (and even those who are), Minnesota winters can be challenging to navigate. As this past weekend showed, we can receive a LOT of snow in one day! The weather gets colder, sidewalks get slippery, winter parking rules go into effect, and driving is more challenging. All of this can affect commutes to campus as well as daily life. Here are some tips to surviving the cold and snow: Have proper clothing (jacket, waterproof boots, gloves, scarf, etc.), dress in layers, keep gloves and blanket in your car in case of emergencies, know the winter parking rules, keep a shovel in your car, and embrace the winter activities! There are a lot of fun winter activities in Minnesota to get out an enjoy the cold weather. Favorite winter activities include ice skating on the frozen lakes and winter festivals.

ACT | Prepare your car

Winter driving can be unpredictable and being prepared for emergencies is extremely important. If you are planning winter travel by car, plan ahead to help avoid trouble and have an emergency kit in your car. Of course the best thing to do during a snow storm is to stay home and off the roads, but if you can't drive carefully!

GIVE | Donate to Food Shelves

Consider donating directly to local food shelves this holiday season. Monetary donations are most effective as the food shelf is often able to purchase bulk products and can determine what to purchase based on need.
