Feminism as a STEM Professional

“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own. And I am not free as long as one person of Color remains chained. Nor is any one of you.” - Audre Lorde, National Women’s Studies Association Conference, Storrs, Connecticut, June 1981 (Full speech here).

On October 2, 2021 women all over the United States marched in protest against the recent Texas Senate Bill 8 (SB8) and its implications on reproductive rights. Pictured above is the Bans Off Our Bodies protest held here in the Twin Cities, starting in the Sculpture Garden and ending at Loring Park. SB8, which effectively bans abortion in Texas, circumvented the Supreme Court by delocalizing the enforcement of the law and transferring it to ordinary citizens for bounties, making the law difficult to challenge in the court system.

The issue of reproductive justice may at first seem unrelated to the every-day experience of scientists and engineers in our department. However this could not be farther from the truth, as we continue to aspire to build a more inclusive department which values each person regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Supporting and protecting the right to choose, especially when in the academic space there exist several challenges in pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing for women with little offered support, is a crucial step towards a more equitable place to work.

LEARN | The Push for the Equal Rights Amendment in Minnesota

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the U.S. Constitution in 1943 states: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

Learn More

Having passed the House and Senate in 1972, the 27th  amendment needed at least 38 votes in 7 years to ratify. In the end, only 34 states voted to ratify the ERA. In 1982, it was reintroduced and has been an ongoing battle ever since. Passing this amendment can offer support to existing programs helping women such as the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Title IX, and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, as well as a path towards closing the gender pay gap and gaining reproductive freedom.

Currently 26 states have their own ERA’s added to their constitutions, affording protections against sexual discrimination. Minnesota, however, is not included in this list of states, and is still fighting for its inclusion in its constitution. ERA MN is currently at work trying to get the amendment on the ballot for the 2022 Midterm Elections.

ACT | Take Action Minnesota

There is no better way to take action than to vote. With the 2021 mayoral elections already underway (Sept. 16-Nov. 2), knowing the different candidates’ platforms is key. Local elections, especially in off-years, are often underestimated in their importance and often have lower turnouts than those for federal public office. Take Action MN is committed to bringing people and organizations together to make lasting changes. Among their list of 2021 endorsements for this election cycle are two Minneapolis mayoral candidates, Kate Knuth and Sheila Nezhad. Don’t forget to register to vote!
