On September 11, 2001, four airplanes were hijacked by Islamic terrorists and used attack the World Trade Center (Twin Towers) and Pentagon, with one plane crash-landing in Pennsylvania. 2,996 people died in the attack, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in world history. Ground Zero, pictured above, marks where the tower once stood. This day is remembered in America as a tragedy for the many lives lost.

War in Afghanistan

In 2001, US president George W. Bush demanded that Afghanistan hand over Osama bin Laden, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, but the Taliban refused to extradite him. This led to the invasion of the country and war in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021. This war was the longest in United States history.

Following 9/11, there was a wave of anti-Muslim bias, harassment, and violence. Mainstream media showed Middle Eastern characters as terrorists or threatening crime figures and perpetuated negative stereotypes of all Arab people. It is important to identify your personal biases or misconceptions in order to treat people fairly and with respect.
