Racist or funny?

Two months ago, Kim Saira, a TikTok and Instagram influencer, started a petition against the “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” segment from the CBS’s “The Late Late Show”, as the segment contained contents that ridiculed non-Anglo foods which are actually delicacies in other cuisines, such as balut and chicken feet. Last week, the petition concluded with a promise from James Corden that no Asian foods would be featured on his show again. (NBC News) Why this is such big of a deal that 41k people joined the petition? In this week’s newsletter, you will learn about how food is the manifestation of culture and plays an important role in discovering/reassuring one’s identity, and understand the implicit racism behind reactions to foreign/unfamiliar objects.
