Classism

11-LandMass

Classism is a system of beliefs and cultural attitudes that ranks people according to economic status, family lineage, job status, level of education, and other divisions. Middle-class and owning- or ruling-class people (dominant group members) are seen as smarter and more articulate than working-class and poor people (subordinated groups). In this way, dominant group members define for everyone else what is “normal” or “acceptable” in the class hierarchy. Classism also refers to the unequal access to resources and impaired financial mobility between class lines.

LEARN | Classism in Minneapolis/St. Paul

This PBS documentary explores the intersection of racism and classism as it exists in Twin Cities housing market.

"Why does Minnesota suffer through some of the worst racial disparities in the nation? One answer is the spread of racist, restrictive real estate covenants in the early 20th century. Jim Crow of the North charts the progression of racist policies and practices from the advent of restrictive covenants after the turn of the last century to their final elimination in the late 1960s."
