Holiday Special: Passover and Holi |
---|
The seven (Israel) or eight (Diaspora) day Jewish holiday of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan, which occurs this year from March 27 - April 4. Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. The beginning of the holiday is marked by Passover Seder, a feast held on the first night as well as on the second night for some Jewish diasporas. Seder meals typically include four cups of wine, eating matzah and bitter herbs, and retelling the story of the Exodus. |

Holi: The Festival of Colors |
---|
Holi is a Hindu spring festival that originated in India and is celebrated throughout the Indian subcontinent and the Indian diaspora today. The predominant tradition associated with this holiday is the "festival of colors", where people play music, dance, smear each other with colored powders and spray with colored water. The night before Holi is known as Holika Dahan and is celebrated with a bonfire symbolizing the defeat of evil. There are numerous legends from different parts of India that explain the origins of Holi, but a common theme throughout many of them is a celebration of a demon being killed by fire. This year, Holi is celebrated from 28th - 29th of March. |
