Gentrification and the Fight for Equitable Urban Development

What is Gentrification?

With COVID-19 still wreaking havoc on our country and the world, a number of communities have been greatly affected by an exacerbated housing crisis. Even though Biden’s extension of the eviction moratorium will act as a temporary solution for the increased number of people unable to make rent each month, the issue of equitable housing and renter protections is not new. Gentrification, a term coined by sociologist Ruth Glass in 1964, refers to the displacement of communities as neighborhoods are developed and middle to upper class people take their place. Usually these communities are primarily composed of BIPOC and have a rich history that gets erased by rapid urbanization. The video above is from the 1991 movie Boyz N The Hood and gives an excellent description of gentrification.

Figure 5, from a longitudinal study of gentrification in the Twin Cities by the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) at the University of Minnesota, shows in blue the affordable neighborhoods in Minneapolis where the renter at the median income could afford median priced housing. The figure shows how the availability of affordable neighborhoods dramatically changed from 2000 to 2016 for each ethnic group. Learn more about the rest of the study by clicking on the link below.
