Celebrating Black History Month

sirismm

“Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.”        - Carter G. Woodson

Black History Month, or African American History Month, began in February 1926 as a weeklong celebration called Negro History Week, organized to encompass the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. As a Harvard-trained historian, Carter G. Woodson, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) and started Negro History Week to raise awareness of African American's contributions to civilization. By the time of Woodson's death in 1950, Negro History Week had become a central part of African American life, and Woodson is now known as the "Father of Black History." The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, by President Gerald R. Ford.
