Join CEMS SOAR!

Students Organizing Against Racism (SOAR) is a student led group of graduate students, undergraduates, and post-docs that works collaboratively with staff and faculty to build towards an anti-racist CEMS that is supportive of and welcoming to all.

As a student group, we are encouraging more faculty and staff involvement! We will be hosting more opportunities where faculty and staff can be present and suggest ideas to create a more inclusive CEMS.

How to Get Involved

SOAR is made up of three teams: Education & Evaluation, Recruitment & Retention, and Outreach. Top initiatives are described below.

Interested in participating on our teams to actively help make positive changes to the CEMS department? Email us to get started!
Interested in helping make a difference but don't have that much time? Other ways to participate: (1) attend monthly discussion events open to the entire department and/or (2) send us suggestions of resources and topics you'd like discussed at future events, meetings, and weekly newsletters.

Education and Evaluation

Host educational social events like movie nights and diversity discussion hours
Coordinate DEI trainings with OED for students and faculty
Send out weekly newsletters
Coordinate resources and content suggestions

Recruitment and Retention

Promote diversity and equity through fair recruiting and build welcoming culture
Develop mentorship program
Help coordinate Welcome Week and Visit Weekend events
Work with faculty to reevaluate the admission process

Outreach

Host and coordinate in-person visits (& virtual visits) and activities
Host tours of CEMS and related UMN facilities
Collaborate with current outreach groups and the CEMS Department
Expand CEMS relationships with educational institutions
