Violent killings of transgender people since 2013

Violent killings of transgender people since 2013

In honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) on Friday, November 20, we focus on supporting the transgender and LGBTQ+ community. TDoR is an international event where we remember all transgender people who have been victims of violence. Since 2013, 183 trans people have been murdered. Of these 158 were trans women, 80% of which were women of color. The story of the TDoR begins in 1998 with the unsolved murder of Rita Hester, a black transgender woman. Local news agencies refused to represent Rita’s life and identity in the stories that were written. This coupled with the apathy of law enforcement in solving the case sparked the “Remembering Our Dead” project and TDoR for the international transgender community.
