Understanding immigration in the past and present

Racial issues have persisted in the US since its founding, and the layer of complexity grows as immigrants continue to join the existing community. Although progress has been made towards a society of equality, people of color are still subject to implicit and/or explicit biases arising from past political and military choices, over which they had no control. This week, let’s look into the becoming of a race, learn about effects of current isolationistic policies, and find out ways we can help. Check out the UMN's Immigration History Research Center for their Immigrant Stories and Immigrants in COVID America projects, as well as registering for their event, Covering Immigration in an Election Year.

ACT | SUBMIT FORMAL COMMENT PROTESTING CHANGE IN F/J VISAS

Currently international student visas are good for "duration of status," meaning students can stay in the U.S. for as long as they remain enrolled in school. On September 24th, the Department of Homeland Security proposed a change to this policy that would render student visas invalid after a DHS-determined period of 2-4 years, requiring students to file for extensions, which could take months with no guarantee. Fortunately, the rule has yet to go into effect and is open for public comment until October 26th. Please submit a formal comment to support our international students! Move information available at UMN's ISSS.

LEARN | THE COLOR OF SUCCESS: ASIAN AMERICANS AND THE ORIGINS OF THE MODEL MINORITY

The Color of Success: Asian Americans and the Origins of the Model Minority”, written by Prof. Ellen Wu, traced the becoming of the nowadays Asian American identity. From “yellow peril” to “model minorities”, this transformation unveiled the impact of foreign relations on racial order in the US, as well as the persistence of racism such that the recognition of Asians as legitimate citizens is still based on their compliance to existing western traditions.
