Hi there,

I've been selling our inventory and assets for nearly 5 months now; if you've already stopped by - I appreciate you very much! If you haven't yet - this is now your absolute last opportunity to get gear & fixtures from me.

Whatever is not sold at the end of the month will be either donated or consigned; if consigned, prices will go up to cover the consignment shop take, so in these last few days, I'm doing even higher discounts (save me from having to move stuff).

How to shop => make an appointment with me by responding to this email or texting +1-415-813-1881 (no calls) to come by 563 Sutter in San Francisco. I'm pretty flexible, though weekday late afternoons or after work tend to work best.

What's still available =>

  • Camp - not much left! Mainly the ~5 sleeping bags in the pic above
  • Climb - we still have plenty of shoes, particularly in the larger and smaller sizes (11+ and 8-)
  • Snow - we still have most of our inventory of jackets, pants, helmets, goggles, gloves, and snowshoes. I realize it's not the season, but at these prices, stock up now!
  • Fixtures - literally everything from the track lights in the shop, to air purifiers, dehumidifiers, printers, curtains, and shelving brackets (zoom into the pic above to see some things)

I can ship for an extra fee, but note that you have to accept it in as-is condition. All sales are final.

Curious what's happening with the business & me? Scroll to the very bottom.

Make some $ helping me find buyers for our larger fixtures!

There are some large fixtures that have been difficult to sell (donating is the backup plan, but I'm primarily trying to recoup losses here). If you can intro me to a buyer, I'll give you 10% of the final purchase price!

These items don't have an asking price. I'm open to offers, and am including my original purchase price. For any item where there's more than one piece, I'm happy to sell piecemeal. I have all the detailed measurements for whoever is interested.

While many of these might go to business buyers, I have had some folks just grabbing heavy fixtures for their homes; you never know!

Custom security gate - $7,000 original cost

This is actually 4 pieces. The main sliding gate to the right. The small strip above that. And then on the left, there are 2 equal-sized pieces blocking off that opening. This would be great for any new retail/restaurants.

Custom A-frame shelves - $4,000 original cost

FSC-certified redwood, ~76 inches tall, ~51 inches wide, and the lowest, deepest shelf is ~18 inches. Coolest feature => they are mounted on hidden casters - so even loaded with gear, they'll roll around!

Custom lockers - $3,000 original cost

There are 2 separate banks of lockers here, the larger 4 on the left (which can hold a cooler!), and the smaller 6 on the right. The keypads are reprogrammable, similar to gyms. Could be really neat for a makerspace!

Gridwalls - $1,500 original cost

I have 5 panels (48x96 inches each, 2 shown here) and also a freestanding unit (48x72 inches), with various shelves, baskets, and hooks. For home use, I see it as the ultimate garage organizer!

Remote door control - $600 original cost

This is what powered our self service access (it's the Kisi system, note that this is an older model, exempt from the subscription model, so you can just pay for the hardware and use it). Let folks can unlock doors with a link, an app, or a fob - could be useful for small office or apartment!

Fire safe cabinet - $900 original cost

Use it to hold propane, paints, aerosols, or anything else with a flammability risk. Also great for a workshop or makerspace!

Business update - we're shuttering.

I had about a dozen conversations trying to give away the business for free (see last newsletter for context). Unfortunately nothing panned out. The Bay Area is just too expensive for something so operationally intense (someone has to clean tents!). Someone would have to both possess an inane passion for circular economy, and either a ton of saved money or an undying patience for the "ramen diet." I wasn't able to find that unicorn.

I'm still open to conversations as they come, but most likely, this is the end of the line!

Personal update - a vacation... and exploring advisory work.

(I don't know where I'm going on vacation yet... definitely by the next & final update!)

Over 10 years doing Last Minute Gear, I've become a stalwart supporter of small business owners, and, especially over the last year with my *other* full time job as Entrepreneur-in-Residence at ICA Fund, keen on helping them succeed with the same kind of business intelligence I was providing to multinational corporate leaders while I was at at Bain & Co. I'll be working with a few founders/exec leaders 1-on-1 and figuring out how I might take this forward.

A productized version of some *very specific* insights I had became this course on Micromanagement Detox! If I can help you or anyone else, feel free to reach out: coaching@jamesdong.com.

What a journey it's been... thanks for being a part of that!

James
