President's Corner

With the new year starting, there are a couple of changes on the Swami’s board I wanted to make the members aware of. Patrick Hailey, after having been on the board for a two-year term, will be stepping down. Patrick has represented Swami's during many of his extraordinary record-breaking accomplishments, was the driving force behind our new and loved Tour de Carlsbad, and has been instrumental in maintaining the Hoppy Hour ride's fearsome reputation. This certainly doesn’t mean you won't see him on Swami's rides, but he has some exciting opportunities that you can read about below.

I’d also like to welcome long-time Swami's member Rich Kelly to the Swami’s advisory board. Rich has decades of experience in the cycling industry and I greatly look forward to his input on our club. Make sure to thank Patrick and Rich for their commitment to Swami’s when you see them.

2/1 Social Ride

On Sunday, February 1, we're hosting our monthly Swami's Social Ride. It’s a conversationally-paced ride where you can meet long-time as well as new Swami’s members. You can check out all of the details here. We start and finish the Social Rides at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in Bressi Ranch (map). Wear a Swami's kit from any year to get a coffee and baked good, on Swami’s! Have a classic bike you like to show off? This is the ride.

2/7 Cabrillo Ride

On Saturday, February 7 we’ll do one of our favorite rides south, to Cabrillo National Monument. Once there, you can ride down to the tidepools and then back up, or stay around the gift shop and take in the views. If you have an annual Cabrillo pass, bring it along - it will provide admission for you and 3 other cyclists. There are usually enough passes to cover everyone, but in the unlikely event you need one, a 1-day cyclist pass is $10 at the gate.

2/14 Lucy and Will Wedding Ride

In November, the rain foiled our plans to celebrate the wedding of Swami’s members Lucy Bruemmer and Will Moses, but what better day to reschedule than Saturday, February 14, with a route designed by Lucy and Will that’s guaranteed to make you think about your heart.

If you’ve ridden one of the Swami’s rides recently, chances are you’ve met Lucy and Will. Lucy is a second-generation Swami - her mom Heather is a former president of the organization and her dad David can be found on the Strava leaderboards of most segments in North County. So it wouldn’t be too much of an exaggeration to say Lucy has been a Swami since she was in utero. Husband Will makes an excellent addition to the Swami’s family dynasty. You can find him taking pulls at the front of the B rides and putting the hurt on the Hoppy Hour riders, but his favorite effort of all is the sprint to Bird Rock Cafe for pastries at the end of the Swami’s Social Ride.

Join us for a unique ride that combines the Swami’s FriDave and Hoppy Hour rides and symbolizes Lucy and Will’s walk down the aisle with His and Hers sprints up Faraday! We’ll roll from Cadence at 8:20 AM. Feel free to show up in your black tie kit.

2/28 Thug Ride

On Saturday, February 28, we'll join the monthly Thug Ride hosted by Cadence Cyclery. Don't let the name scare you - it's just a mashup of the names of the cyclists who founded the ride, Thurlow Rogers and Doug Pomeranz. And don't let the fact that Thurlow is a former Olympic cyclist and Doug is a Cat 1 racer scare you either. There will be B and C groups, each with its own leader, so show up - there's a version of the ride for you!

The groups will roll from Cadence (map) starting at 8:15.

Route: 46 mi/2228' https://ridewithgps.com/routes/53850827

Going to extremes

In stepping down from the Swami's board to move to his next venture, Patrick Hailey has these words for all his fellow Swamis:

I wanted to take a moment to thank all the Swami members for all of their gracious support over the past few years. My success on the bike has led me to a position on the Board of Directors for the World Ultra Cycling Association (WUCA) where I will be focusing my volunteer efforts moving forward, along with a few other cycling ventures. I will still be attending Swami‘s rides when possible. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the first Hoppy of the year!
