President's Corner

It's such a great time to be a cyclist in San Diego. Warm days, sunny skies, tourists heading home, and kids back in school. To that end, we have lots to look forward to, so make sure to read about all the exciting upcoming events. First, are you planning on attending the Tour de Carlsbad on Saturday, August 30? If you’ve never ridden this ride, I highly recommend it. Fun, challenging, at times dizzying. Thanks to Patrick Hailey for putting all the effort into creating this unique and challenging route - though did he really need to put Bolero so close to the end? Also be sure to check out the Vuelta ride we've planned. We'll watch the penultimate stage and then head out to a hilly route, thanks to Swami James MacDonald, and then head back to Lost Abbey to continue the celebration. Then next month? Time for Club Night at Cadence!

Finally, for those who attended the Eliel TdF ride last month, you all saw the photographer. Ryan has made his photos available to us all. All he asks is to give the photographer credit by linking his IG handle. There’s some great ones in there, so be sure to take a look.

9/1 All Stripes Labor of Love Ride

On Monday, September 1, we invite you to join the All Stripes Labor of Love Ride. What better way to end the official summer season than to ride with clubs from around North County down to Mt. Soledad and then back along the 56 bike path and through Rancho Santa Fe?

Join us at Cadence Cyclery (map) at  8:00 am for coffee. We'll ride at 8:30 am, then eat and drink at Moto Deli. There are two routes:

See the Strava post for more information.

9/7 Social Ride

On Sunday, September 7, we're hosting our monthly Swami's Social Ride. It’s a conversationally-paced ride where you can meet long-time as well as new Swami’s members. You can check out all of the details here. We start and finish the Social Rides at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in Bressi Ranch (map). Wear a Swami's kit from any year to get a coffee and baked good on Swami’s. And if you have a classic bike to show off, this is your chance!

Note the new route: Although some of the hazardous stops on Melrose Drive have been removed, the lane continues to be unfavorable for group rides due to debris. Download the new route!

9/13 La Vuelta viewing and ride

Saturday, September 13 is the queen stage of La Vuelta a España, a punishing mountain showdown taking the riders from Robledo de Chavela into the heart of the Sierra de Guadarrama, ascending multiple historic climbs before culminating in a brutal, high‑altitude summit finish atop the Bola del

In the same spirit, we’ll meet at Lost Abbey (map) and watch the stage, which will inspire us to then head out for a hilly ride and a return to Lost Abbey for some post ride refreshments. The ride will roll after the stage ends, which is estimated at 8:17 am.

    9/27 Swamdo Training Ride #1

Fall is typically the start of the off-season, where riders relax, lower their expectations of themselves, and focus on their goals for the next year. Our Swami’s Gran Fondo, Swamdo, is an annual excuse to ignore all that and get your butt in shape to do a century ride with 7000+ feet of elevation in the middle of November. Our Swamdo training rides will get you there, and they start on Saturday, September 27. We’ll start easy with the familiar Vista Twist route, leaving from Lost Abbey at 8:00. Bathrooms will open at 7:30.

    Swamis Racing News

Big news for the final racing update of the season! At the SCNCA Masters State Criterium Championships held in Costa Mesa on August 10, Swami’s racer Mark Palmer won the 65+ category. After multiple attacks and counters, the field let Mark roll away solo and hold a gap of about 20 seconds.

Scott Claes covered any attempts to bridge or close by the few remaining strong riders that tried to chase. The gap went out to about 35 seconds and was only closed to 16 seconds in the final laps. Congrats Mark for a great performance and capping off a nice racing season! See the complete results here.
