President's Corner I wanted to quickly explain why we had to cancel the Poker Ride. A lot goes into organizing these events, planning, volunteers and spending the club’s money. We always make the best efforts to make your membership dollars go as far as possible, so we always want to make sure we order the right amount of food, snacks, and drinks, both for the rest stops and the finish. Hence we ask participants, even for free events to the members, to register. This is so key to us, to properly judge the amounts we need, without wasting resources. |

|
Unfortunately I don’t think we did a good job conveying the need to register, so with less than a week before the event, we only had a little over a dozen registrations. So what’s on us, going forward, is to promote the need to register for these events and what I ask you, is that you help us out and register early if you are likely to attend. Hats off to Patrick Haley for his Everest Challenge, a truly impressive accomplishment, both physically and mentally! Finally, a reminder: Wednesday evenings, from Lost Abbey in Vista it’s Hoppy Hour Time! All groups roll at 5:30 pm. Mark Steele |

7/4 Lentz is More Memorial RideOn Friday, July 4, we will join an all-group ride for the Lentz is More Memorial Ride to commemorate the life of Kevin Lentz, who was tragically killed while on a ride in 2019. Kevin was a quiet force—kind, humble, and incredibly strong on the bike. He rode with numerous riding clubs and his influence was felt far beyond the bike. On July 4, we’ll join the ride in Kevin’s memory. The route will take us to his memorial sign, honoring Kevin’s life and the kind of rider and friend he was. The ride will leave from Cadence Cyclery (map) at 8:30 am and will be a community, no-drop ride. For more information, see the Facebook event post. |

7/5 Independence Day Holiday Ride 2025 On Saturday, July 5, to celebrate Independence Day weekend, we'll head out for one of our classic rides, startig at Lost Abbey (map) at 8:00 and visiting Lilac, Champagne, and Jesmond Dene. Those who want a little less climbing before they hit Champagne can take the shorter route, which cuts out Lilac: Afterward, enjoy the food truck and beer at Lost Abbey! See our Independence Day Ride post for more information. |

7/6 Social Ride On Sunday, July 6, we're hosting our monthly Swami's Social Ride. It’s a conversationally-paced ride where you can meet long-time as well as new Swami’s members. You can check out all of the details here. We start and finish the Social Rides at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in Bressi Ranch (map). Wear a Swami's kit from any year to get a coffee and baked good on Swami’s. And if you have a classic bike to show off, this is your chance! Note the new route: Because curb stops have been installed to separate the bike lane on Melrose Drive, making it more hazardous for large group rides, we are riding a route that avoids the Melrose segment. Download the new route! Route: 34 miles/1540’ https://ridewithgps.com/routes/48626897 |

7/12 Coronado Ride On Saturday, July 12, by popular demand, we’ll be doing our first ever summer Coronado ride! We’ll leave from Cadence Cyclery (map) and head through downtown San Diego, then along the Silver Strand to Coronado, where we’ll take the ferry back across the bay and ride back to the start. See our Coronado Ride post for all the details. Remember to bring $9.00 per person for the ferry crossing, or pay beforehand at this link. Remember to pause your Strava on the ferry or your average speed will take a nose dive! |

7/19 Tour de France Ride The Tour de France is upon us again, and it’s the perfect excuse to get together with fellow cyclists and enjoy our favorite sport! On Saturday, July 19, we’ll kick off the day with a morning ride and return for food and beer! We have two rides to choose from. They both leave from Lost Abbey (map) at 8:00 am: As usual, we'll offer prizes for KOM and QOM on a climb and a sprint. The long route climb award will be for Couser Canyon and the short route climb award will be for West Lilac Rise. The sprint award will be for the Hutchinson sprint. Important: To be eligible to win, you must join the Swami’s Strava Club: https://www.strava.com/clubs/swamis-cycling-club. For up to date information and any changes, see the TdF event on our web site. Allez! |

I Get High With A Little Help From My Friends Mount Everest peaks at an elevation of 29,032 feet. Swami’s member Patrick Haley peaked at an elevation of 29,228 feet on June 7 after climbing Tolkien Way in Carlsbad 168 times over 13 hours and 11 minutes, adding an Everest to his already long list of superhuman achievements! |
|

|
Patrick left base camp - the corner of Tolkien and Twain - at a quarter to six in the morning, expecting a long solitary day of climbing. But he was soon surprised to see Swamis and other members of the cycling community showing up to ride laps with him, honk their car horns, and cheer him on from the side of the road. Patrick details his experience in his Strava post and sends his gratitude to all those who gave him the mental pushes to help him keep pedaling up that hill! |
