President's Corner

It takes time, effort and dedication of a group of volunteers to run this club. After many years making things happen, one of the most dedicated board members, Tatiana Dearinger, is breaking away. We are all deeply grateful for all she's done to make the Swami's organization run smoothly: planning rides, organizing events, serving as a volunteer, contributing her wisdom as a steady, guiding force, and helping selflessly in countless other ways - not to mention being an always bright and cheerful riding companion. Thanks Tatiana for all your years of dedicated service - you will be dearly missed!

7/4 Fourth of July One Ride - One Love

On Thursday, July 4, Coureur and Rouleur present one big parade ride, leaving at 8:30 am from Rouleur Brewing Company (map) to celebrate our independence and great nation. There will be one route for everyone to enjoy. Note: the original route was changed to something more coastal, in anticipation of potential high temperatures. Show up early to socialize and stay after for some beer drinking and reveling. See the Facebook page for more information.

7/6 Rouleur Rides of Independence

On Saturday, July 6, we’ll join Rouleur Brewing for the Rides of Independence! The event will feature both road and gravel routes and will depart the brewery (map) at 8:00, finishing around 11:00, with food and drinks available afterward. Be sure to bring full bottles - it might be warm that day! See the Facebook page for more information.

7/7 Social Ride

On Sunday, July 7, we're hosting our monthly Swami's Social Ride. It’s a conversationally-paced ride where you can meet long-time as well as new Swami’s members. You can check out all of the details here. A reminder: we now start and finish the Social Rides at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in Bressi Ranch (map). Wear a Swami's kit from any year to get a coffee and baked good on Swami’s!

7/13 Tour de France ride and viewing party

The Tour de France is upon us again, and it’s the perfect excuse to get together with fellow cyclists and enjoy our favorite sport! On Saturday, July 13, we’ll kick off the day with a morning ride and return for food and beer while we watch Stage 14 - or just party!

We have two rides to choose from, and the start times are staggered so we get back to Rouleur around the same time.

Information about the routes, party, and more are on our registration page.

Roll times are 8:00 for the 58 mile ride or 8:30 for the 49 mile ride. Lunch and the first beer are included with registration, which is free for Swami’s members – beer provided by Rouleur, of course!

Remember, you need to register - free for Swami's members until Friday 7/12, and for others, $20 for the full party or $14 for just the food without the beer. Allez!

Return to San Clemente!

Now that Camp Pendleton is issuing base passes again, we will resume our San Clemente LSD ride starting in mid-July. Don't wait to get your base pass! Go to the visitor’s center (map) and make sure you have all the required information - just a driver’s license isn’t enough! If you don’t have a RealID you also need one of the following in addition to your driver’s license: US passport, US passport card, US permanent resident card, certificate of naturalization, or both your Social Security card and birth certificate. More information about visitor center hours and access is here

Also, on rides through Camp Pendleton make sure you have a form of identification with you in addition to your base pass, such as a driver's license. Even though it's not their official policy, some guards have asked the group to show their ID's.

Poker riders are flush with success!

This year’s Poker Ride was even more out there than last year’s, with one team taking a mile long hike-a-bike “shortcut”, another riding so fast they got to the station before the volunteers did, another accidentally arriving at the card stop for a different poker ride happening on the same day, and yet another discovering how nice all the drivers are to cyclists when they’re wearing tutus! The stops featured the founders of Eliel Cycling taking the time out from running their business to test teams’ abilities to change flats, a hatchet throw contest in Kit Carson park, a strict Velominati Rules oral exam at the stop in Del Mar Mesa, and at Cadence Cyclery, the nemesis of every cyclist, a pushup contest.

The two top teams constantly kept an eye on each other as they crossed paths numerous times. The team spirit was apparent everywhere, and each team chose a unique route, with relatively few mechanicals, no injuries and a team finish.

We all met back at the starting point at Aviara Community Park, replenished ourselves with burritos and beer, and celebrated the winners for each category.

Thanks to the volunteers who made it all happen: Ryan Cady and Derek Wilkback from Eliel, Derrick and Kristy Francis, parents of the North County High School MTB team, Swami’s members Kevin Wueste and Randall Tinney, and especially, event organizers Natalie Walker, Tatiana Dearinger, and Susan Anthony!

Swami's Cycling Team

Swami’s Cycling Team had a great month, with a first place podium for team captain Scott Claes in the Master’s 60+ category at the Barrio Logan Grand Prix! Check out the results here and become part of the action with this video of the last two laps! Well done Scott!

We look forward to more victories as the season heads into its bell lap!

Aero Kit Order Update

For those of you who ordered the aero road suit in the Swami’s summer style: look for it to arrive in late July and in the mean time, keep up that bikini bod!
